I just flashed my E4200 to this TomatoUSB firmware: 1.28.2493 MIPSR2-Toastman-VLAN-RT-N K26 USB Ext Filename: tomato-E4200USB-NVRAM60K-1.28.2493MIPSR2-Toastman-VLAN-RT-N-Ext.bin
So glad to have some quality firmware again!
After some initial wonkyness that was quickly taken care of by an NVRAM purge - I'm noticing something that is a little disconcerting on eth2 (my 5Ghz radio)
Here's the status: (MAC/SSID zeroed out for privacy)
MAC Address 00:00:00:00:00:00 Wireless Mode Access Point Wireless Network Mode N Only Interface Status Up (LAN) Radio Enabled SSID 00000000 Broadcast Enabled Security WPA2 Personal (PSK) + AES Channel 149 - 5.745 GHz Channel Width 40 MHz Interference Level Acceptable Rate 58.5 Mbps
That last part about "rate" concerns me...It shows 450 Mbps for a few moments after a reboot or disable/re-enable of eth2 - then it starts to fluctuate between 58.5 and 65 Mbps. Is this normal behavior? The 2.4 Ghz radio is in "Auto" mode for mixed b/g/n and its rate is showing as 72 Mbps.
Edit: I should probably add the n-capable clients connected to my network. 1) Apple iPad 2 16GB WiFi (Only 5Ghz compatible device I have) 2) Asus 1215B Netbook with Broadcom 802.11b/g/n (2.4Ghz)
Other Non-N Wireless Devices: 3) Xbox 360 S 4) PS3 Slim 5) Wii 6) iPhone 3GS
Final edit: Did some digging and it looks like the iPad 2 only has 1 wireless antenna - which means that it does not support MIMO and therefore is limited to less than stellar N speeds...even though it's on the 5Ghz band. Hooray Apple...

The E4200 is a 3x3 system -- 3 radios and 3 antennas for each band. To be able to exploit the performance that the E4200 is capable of the exploiting clients must also be 3x3 for the band they want to utilize.
MIMO is very badly abused by many of the Vendors and the 'standards' group. They sell MIMO systems that have very little to do with MIMO -- they do this to quell the nerves of the many consumers who have a large mix of wireless gear called the heterogeneous mix.
Because you have a mix of wireless stuff not capable that group of wireless gear will degrade YOUR E4200 down to serve that mix.
Tomato or any other 3rd party firmware will not be able to fix this aberration because of how REAL MIMO or TRUE MIMO works. What 3rd party firmware provides is greater functionality .. that's it!
IF you want to exploit your E4200 properly then ALL your Clients need to be equally as capable.

The 450 Mbps is the connect speed capability if you have a wireless N-client capable of trans/receiving this speed. The rate shown is the rate of your lowest client (not necessarily the rate for all other clients). You also might want to check out the linksysinfo.org Tomato forum -- great feedback from Tomato users and developers. Also have specific threads regarding setup and answers to your questions. I usually connect to my n-clients at 300 mbps ... either on 2.4 ghz or 5 ghz - more often on the 5 ghz since it has the bandwidth to handle more n-speed clients. I don't have a client capable of Rx/Tx at 450.
