I'm thinking an LCD backlight issue...

I concur, probably the inverter board for the screen. If you have an extra monitor around try plugging it in and see if you get a picture. (To the VGA plug on the notebook).

If all else looks good and powers up fine, it's most likely the inverter board.

Let me tell you what Melba Toast is packin' right here, all right. We got 4:11 Positrac outback, 750 double pumper, Edelbrock intake, bored over 30, 11 to 1 pop-up pistons, turbo-jet 390 horsepower. We're talkin' some funkin' muscle.

Look VERY closely at the LCD, do you see a VERY dim picture being displayed?

Yes, your backlight has failed (bulb or board)
No, you can try to connect to an external screen, see if you get a picture. Report back.

An inverter / backlight issue won't cause the symptoms described. There will be an obvious but faint image.

Take all the memory out of the system and turn the system on. Any beeps? If not your board is likely toast assuming the speaker works otherwise.

If you are unsure about the speaker, try one memory stick at a time if you have more than one. It is unlikely that two memory sticks failed though a bad one could cause your issue.

Barring that you are likely looking at a bad board.

I agree. If an external monitor is showing the same problem then you have something else going on.

You can try the memory checks psafux talks about.
You can also try the standard unplug from the wall and adapter, remove the battery(so there is no power of any kind going to the machine), press the power on button a number of times and hold it. Then plug the machine back into the adapter and see if it powers up on ac power.

Other than this there isn't much you can do at the user end. The motherboard or graphics chip on the board could be shot.

There was a screen blanking issue/bios issue with these machines but shutting the machine down and booting it back up was supposed to bring the machine back up so this doesn't seem to be your exact problem. Looks more like a hardware failure.
