Do they make any type of dsl booster?

Not for wi-fi but for line loss? I pay for a 10mb plan, actually i guess its a 20mb plan now because i guess they bumped everyone up last summer for free. But i only get around 5mb dl. I like to play alot of online games but my connection just isnt good enough to competitive. Sometimes its around 6.5 mb but very rarely and the connection to games arent to bad. I was just wondering do they make any type of dsl booster that you can plug your phone line into to boost the signal strength coming from your isp? Im guessing they dont but i figure it would be worth a shot. Im very limited to who i can get for an isp in my area and this is the best speed i can get. Thanks in advance for any help

There is no end-user "booster" available. You can put in a whole house DSL/POTS filter at the demarc and run a home-run to the modem. Any signal interference potentially from your house wiring would then be isolated.
as an example:

Speed does not = better or problems free playing. You can play on a 3 meg line (I play on a 1.5 meg) and do just fine.

Though I did not think any DSL available for residential service was more than 12 megs by AT&T U-Verse.

So many other things effect gaming - it can be the routing, it can be the game server you are connecting to to name a couple.

What are your specific issues with playing online?

Unlike cable where they can just edit a config and reboot modems to give speed increases, DSL is different. line conditions determine what you can get as max speed. you pay for 10mbps but only get 5 i'm guessing your lines don't qualify for 10m and you're on a 7mbps profile.

10M DSL ? Bumped up to 20M DSL for free ? Who do you have ? As already mentioned, DSL doesn't go over 8M unless you get into U-Verse type service....

Online gaming needs low latency (i.e. ping times) vs high download speeds.

With ADSL2+, ADSL bonding, VDSL, etc you can go over 8mb, just an FYI.

We go up to 15.0m with a single ADSL2+ circuit, but distance, and line quality are big factors.

I actually knew there was the technology for it but didn't know it was offered real-world.

my ping is 55 at least going by speedtest.net thats what it says. i play FPS games mainly COD MW3 right now on my ps3 hardwired directly to my modem. I dunno maybe its just the game but im getting pretty irritated all i can think is everyone must have fios or some super connection because its kind of a joke. I feel like im lagging about a half a second or so i see the guy shoot him first but die every time. Most likely because he actually saw me first but doesnt register on my screen until its too late. I used to have Verizon until Fairpoint took them over the speed was slower i could only get 1.5 mb dl but i never remember having lag issues like this, i wish i could see a ping chart or something or know what it used to be when i had that service. I know the ping is more important then the speed, but it would be kind of nice to have both.

I would check your DNS and see who you are going through. Then I would run some test using the tools available here.

I know you want both, but it's not going to change any "lag". 55ms pings are pretty damn good. My son plays MW3 on 6Mb DSL (real world speed: 3-5Mb) via a wireless repeater. I'll bet you his pings are double and he's never complained about lagging...

I believe most online gaming uses direct IPs, not addresses, i.e. playing off of a "website". DNS shouldn't matter, IMO.

Game uses peer to peer multiplayer and not dedicated servers. You're playing with somebody's plain old residential connection hosting 12+ people + the poor lag compensation built into the game, it's a lag fest in itself. Really nothing you can do about it, it's the game and the problem has existed since the first of the series came out on console years ago.

then why do some people have no problems with the game while some do? I wanted to log into my modem router but my isp wont tell me how to do it. I told them i wanted to do some port forwarding but they said theyre modems are preset and dont block any ports. Anyone else have a comtrend 5072t modem and care to share how you log into it? The thing is i cant figure out why my ps3 directly hooked to my modem only gets about 2/3 the speed when i do a connection test as my computers get. I dunno this stuff is starting to wear on my nerves, why cant it just work like its suppose to.

You don't need to worry about port-forwarding. Really only applies when you're running a "server" or you have other computers connecting *directly* to yours. In gaming, that's not the case.

you could do something kind of easy for a test. run speedtest.net and check your speed and ping. then run a brand new line right from your box (normally outside your house) to the dsl modem. check for any change (for the better).

you could have a bad line somewhere in the house that is causing static/feedback/noise over the whole house lines.

What I did when I had dsl for a bit, helped me track down my issue.

if it does not get any better, then it most likely you are to far from the switch, or you just have bad lines in your area where you live.

i tried to do that. I ran a line directly from my NID at the test jack to my modem and got no internet connection at all. The modem lit up and was all solid green like it had a connection but there was nothing there, i tried it several times resetting the modem and everything but to no avail. I contacted Time warner to see if it was possible to get cable at my house because i live kinda far away from the pole 500 ft and have underground everything, they quoted me a price for the wire and labor at $8 a ft lol i guess im stuck with a crappy dsl connection that always fluctuates from 2.5 mb to 5 dl.

With cable you can have worse fluctuations than that - depending on how well the nodes are designed and implemented.

Plug a phone into that test jack and see if you even get a dial tone.

speed does not effect latency and lag in gaming once you reach a certain pipe size. the speeds you are averaging are more than enough for any game.. routing and many other issues.

Also what sorts of games? the computer itself can effect gaming performance.

Actually it does nowadays just ask any fios sub that gets throttled via netcode to make it more even for the havenots. course low ping isn't going to do anything for someone not good at gaming.
