not @comcast.net | reply to gar187er said by gar187er:you can buy an arris emta from best buy....and again comcast has nothing to do with availability of modems in stores.....
the reason they have 3 stars is that comcast uses mostly arris c4 cmts....
my 760 arris works like a jewel....as does my 604.....on the other hand older moto 5220s were garbage....and thats personal/work exp.
also his signals are fine...+7/50..... I don't agree that his signals are OK. His downstream may be ok, but his upstream dBmV is too high. As that thing starts crossing the 50 mark, it'll actually cause timeouts on network traffic and slowdowns. He'll see it as speed slowness when in fact it's more like packet loss because it's dropping all over the place. If he was to do a ping -t to something reliable like maybe 4.2.2.1, I bet he sees some packet loss. |

not @comcast.net | Oh, and to the OP, yes... the Moto Gateway modems do tend to suck. A lot of that isn't the modem side of things, it's the router side of things... I remember when the SB5xxx Gateways were released with wireless. The wireless covered the room it was in and nothing more. I worked with one at one client site until I pretty much decided they were trash and it wasn't worth the hassle of poor coverage just to have it all in a one-box solution.
Buy yourself a legit Motorola standalone modem and a good router and be done with it. However, before all that, just fix the signal issues because they are not perfect. |

Pinging something closer like one's WAN (Comcast) default gateway would be more accurate for narrowing down local RF signal issues. |

And it doesn't. We don't do this professionaly so not really our fault. Right. It's a raw deal for you. Motorola will blame Comcast and Comcast will blame Motorola. Most likely it is an issue that can be fixed with a firmware upgrade, but when and if Comcast will push a firmware upgrade is unknown. So really your choices are to put up with the daily disconnects in hopes of a firmware upgrade soon or to buy a different modem. FWIW "The new firmware is in the final testing phases. Once it's completed, it will be pushed out automatically. No ETA at the moment."-Steve Teow (ComcastSteve) |

 | reply to nerdburg ComcastSteve, I can only hope they push the firmware but that isn't what I was told.

 | reply to gar187er I was told by the Livermore CA Comcast Center that before the firmware is pushed, a macro is run to test weather the device is leased or owned. The leased devices are pushed the firmware updates. Customer owned devises are not.
My Motorola SBG6580 was provisioned in December 2011 running firmware version 3.0. I bought this unit and on my monthly invoice it states that it is "Docsis 3 Owned Mdm". The SBG6580 started disconnecting several times over the course of several days last week (beginning around 1/20/2012).
From the date the modem/gateway was first provisioned (Dec 2011) Comcast system(s) never pushed ANY firmware update(s) (it should have at least updated the device to ver. 3.1). I can only guess that the Comcast "system" was trying to push an update but once it saw that my devise was customer owned immediately reset my modem, thus the cause of my intermittent connections. This must have been the cause of the intermittent disconnect issues as reflected in my SBG6580 log report.
My solution was to set the SBG6580 device into bridge mode and pursue a firmware update at a later date until ver. 3.30 is ready for release. So far, in bridge mode using a Dlink Dir-655 wireless N router, my connection has been rock solid.
The dual band function in the SBG6580 does provide a better wireless stream (especially when I have multiple wireless devices connected). I also have a separate VOIP SIP device that functions in both configurations (bridged and un-bridged) but am told that with the Docsis 3.1 firmware version, it would drop my SIP calls and/or may not even connect to the outside SIP server). Firmware ver 3.3 supposedly fixes this.
For anybody who needs a step-by-step guide for setting the SBG6580 into bridge mode go to this link: Getting a Motorola SBG6580 into Bridge mode on TimeWarner Wideband »fascinated.fm/post/2379188731/ge···-mode-on
Emailing We_Can_Help@cable.comcast.com resulted in a call back w/i 24 hours. I still did not get a satisfied reply other than the reason for my recent drops was line noise. It was also confirmed (at least by this service rep) that Comcast will not update the firmware for any customer owned devices.
I am sure that if Comcast wanted to, they could code my device as leased and issue me a credit each month on my invoice for the lease fee. So, the best I can determine is as a result of my SBG6580 being coded as an "owned" not leased device, the systems prepares to do an update but immediately sends a rest command, thus causing my frequent intermittent drops. So far, in bridge mode, none of these drops have occurred.

gar187erI do this for a living join:2006-06-24 Dover, DE kudos:1 | firmware is pushed to the device upon sync to the CMTS.....at that point it does not know whether its customer owned or not.....it sees what firmware it had, and then if the cmts has a more current file, its pushed....modem reboots, locks, and then ya do what ya have to do... -- I'm better than you! |

| reply to urdrwho Last week a tech guy said that my upstream numbers were not good. Reaching 56.5 was not good. So today a guy came to climb the pole. He switched out the tap and another piece of hardware. The one piece (can't remember the name) was one that they don't use anymore.
Now my upstream is 45>46 instead of the normal 52.5 > 53 with some spikes thrown in here and there.
We'll see how things go going forward. If there is going to be a log event it will take several to happen because previously it took several days before an event was logged. |

| reply to EG It is now a week since Comcast changed hardware at the pole and my upstream power level went from an average of 53 (spikes up to 56) to an average of 45.5 dBmV.
I have not had one event logged, not one re-synch issue which is something I haven't seen since October 2011.
I believe that the problem was not my modem at all but was old dying hardware at the pole. |
