 | Problems with laptop I have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. Since yesterday, it has been beeping at startup- seven short beeps. Today, I tried updating Avast Antivirus, and they were slow to update. I then tried to run a scan. The program said it detected over 100 files, then it became distorted. My computer clock is not even visible now. I tried looking up the Dell beep codes, but none of them match the pattern of my computer. What could be causing the problem? |

 | reply to Jovi21 I remember having similar issues with beep codes, but this is a new issue for me. I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this same beep code, (and virus problem). I apologize if this seems to be a repeat question. |
 | reply to aguen I posted my question on a Dell forum, and besides mentioning the diagnostics test, they suggested doing a virus/malware scan in safe mode with networking. So if anyone else has this same problem, that is another (possibly quicker) option to try. And aguen, I'm curious- how would you know if I previously asked a similar question? |

1 edit | reply to Jovi21 Because your earlier thread here was returned when I googled your symptoms.
There is also a Security cleanup forum here at DSLR as well that may be of assistance in helping to clean up any infestation you might encounter. You would need to register yourself here before you can post there though (I think).
Here is the link to the forum »Security Cleanup |

 | Oh okay- I'll look into that (even if malware isn't the problem- but at this point, I almost hope it is). |
 | reply to aguen And thank you for the link! |

 | I am also thinking it's a memory problem, based on what I have read. I plan to run the diagnostics sometime soon- is there any way to turn down the volume of it? It is loud and could bother other members of my household. |

Download & use memtest |
 | I will try that if I can access the internet long enough to download it. Thanks! |
 | Actually, I night just run the diagnostics. From what I've read, Memtest can take just as long and will only detect memory problems. If memory would happen to not be the problem, I will have to run the diagnostics anyway. But surely there is a way to turn its volume down (I hope). |

 | Is there anything else I can do if it won't let me run it? |
 | So far, it is letting me run the diagnostics. I haven't encountered any error messages yet. |
 | reply to Jovi21 I completed the scan, and received four error messages. It looks like something is wrong with the hard drive, but I am getting assistance on the Dell forum to be sure. |

 | Is anyone familiar with HD Tune Pro? I did a scan with it and I'm wondering what the results mean. |
 | We often leave the HD troubleshooting analysis to koitsu. Might take a few days for koitsu to notice this though. Do you want to give more detail about what you are confused about? |
 | The results came back with one message: 1 error at 15409 MB (LBA 31557736). It also gave the following information- (C5) Current Pending Sector, Current: 100, Worst: 100, Threshold: 0, Data: 2, Status: Warning. I'm not sure what any of that means. I've never heard of Koitsu- do you have a link to it? |
 | Or is Koitsu a poster on this site? |
