I can connect my iphone to the Belkin without any problems when I am close by but as soon as it drops the connection because I leave the house and return etc. it will no longer connect until I stand close to it. My phone sees the Belkin and there is a strong signal. I have tried adding a repeater to strengthen the signal but no joy. All laptops, notebooks etc. work fine with the Belkin?

Most likely interference on the channel. I'd definitely change the channel and make sure your SSID isn't something like "belkin" because cross talk from other SSID's with the same name will cause issues.
Additionally, you are most likely blasting too much RF signal which can also cause problems (in the WiFi world, more power is not necessarily better)
