waldoooo join:2001-12-15 Fountain Valley, CA | Dell laptop bad battery question trying to help a friend who has a Dell inspiron n7010 laptop.
anyway over the weekend she had a red X over the battery icon in the taskbar by the clock with a message saying something like she should replace the battery because it isn't holding a charge....or something to that effect. She rebooted a couple times hoping the message would disappear.. it didn't. Now last night she went to start it up and nothing happens, no fans, no beeps, no blinking lights.
I always thought most laptops will run straight from the AC adapter but maybe I am mistaken.
I have read some forums online with people having random problems of it going into hibernate mode etc... remove battery, power cord, hold power button down for 30+ seconds then reconnect. She has tried just about anything except shaking a voodoo chicken over it and thats just because the neighborhood witch doctor was fresh out.
When she connects the AC adapter the 3rd light which from what I read is the battery status light comes on solid white...that is the only action it has. And the power light on AC adapter itself is on.
tried to power it up with the battery both attached and out of the unit.
Is it common for a Dell laptop not to do anything if the battery has shorted to gone bad? or is it probably just a coincidence she got the battery message shortly before another type of failure?
Thanks in advance
can always count on everyone here for good advice |

Since you said she tried that, time to call Dell for warranty support. |

I have had that issue with Dells where the power supply goes bad but still appears to 'work', lights up and everything. At first doesn't supply enough to charge, then just won't get the computer on at all. |

| reply to waldoooo After owning many Dell laptops & desktops over the past 10 years, and really had no hardware issues, I got the better half this. For $599, to me it's loaded up as a good middle of the road 15" er. Check the specs. »www.officedepot.com/a/products/6···omputer/ |

It seems like pretty much a crap shot with all of the 'major' brands when it come to Laptops. I bought my Daughter a Dell Inspiron Laptop way back before she first went to college. (Got it really cheap at the time, because I needed something...and I needed it in a hurry). She graduated college ages ago. She gave me the thing back just to fool around with. (She can afford some really nice stuff now, but I can't, after helping pay to put three kids through college). lol. Anyway, the thing still works just fine...(with a fresh XP install on all of the original hardware, including the original Hard Drive.). I did have to replace the battery, and her dog chewed up the power adapter (damn dog), But it's still going strong. So what's junk to one person is sometimes gold to another.
If you happen to have a volt-meter, I would certainly check to see if the power adapter is putting out the required voltage. And even if it is, sometimes it won't deliver the required voltage under load. (I found a replacement for both a battery and an AC adapter really cheap on E-Bay). Were they "genuine" Dell parts? You're kidding, right? Unless the motherboard or some other main component has died (and that may not be the case from the symptoms, as far as it working fine just before the battery 'indicator' started flashing), you may get it humming again.
After paying for most of her education, I was expecting a fancy new desktop with all the fixin's any day as a present. Thankfully, I never held my breath. Otherwise, I would have surely died long ago from lack of oxygen. But hey, I still got the Dell Laptop.

waldoooo join:2001-12-15 Fountain Valley, CA | the power supply is fine, it powered up another dell laptop w/o the battery in it....turns out she still has time left on the extended warranty she bought....they are scheduling a repair now...will let you know the final outcome |

waldoooo join:2001-12-15 Fountain Valley, CA | well famous last words "the power supply is fine"....... it did power up another older dell without a battery so one should assume all is well with it......NOT SO MUCH..... the light on it was on...the other laptop worked with it..
dell support came out..... connected a new power supply and it works like a champ.... live and learn I guess
thanks for all the input everyone |

Had a really bad experiance with Dell service just last week. Dell business series desktop has a "next business day" warranty. Dell setups up service but doesn't schedule appointment. Tech calls next day and says I don't have the parts, will have the Monday. Calls Monday and says "please call me back" but doesn't answer phone or respond to SMS. On Tuesday I get a call from Unisys and I schedule for Wednesday but nobody shows up. I call on Wednesday and they say sorry, you need to call Dell and have them ship new parts, the tech needs to ship them back because he already has them for FIVE days.
So this stupid Dell "onsite warranty" cant get anyone onsite! I chat with Dell again and tell them just ship me the parts, Ragu from India wants to troubleshoot the machine again! Finally talk him out of it. What a nightmare.
OTOH I chat and call HP support for a software issue and they want to throw parts at it. Not ideal, but at least they stand behind their stuff. -- PRescott7-2097 |
