XBOX Live Account and Gamertag Question

Sorry if this is not the right place, as my question is not about a specific game, but also not a hardware question.

Anyway, we just got the xb360 at Christmas, and we set up a few profiles on the console. Now, we want to try the Live function. I created an account on the website from my computer. I was trying to make an account for my son, and since he is a minor, I also had to setup a parent account. That process resulted in two Live accounts and Gamertags.

Now, I am trying to link the profile on the Xbox with the Live account. However, when I use the email and password I setup, it says that the live account "is for a different Gamertag" and indicates I need to try a different login, or setup a new account.

I couldn't find anywhere on the console to show/update/change the gamertag of a profile. I tried just changing the profile name to the gamertag given to me by Live, but I got the same message.

Hopefully this is clear to someone as to what I am trying to do. This seems unnecessarily complicated.

Profile name, account name, and gamertag are all the same thing. It sounds like you made 2 gamertags on your xbox, then created 2 more gamertags on your computer for a total of 4. It appears that you are trying to somehow link one of the gamertags from your xbox with one of the new gamertags you created on your computer, it doesn't work like that. Pick just one and use it, you can't combine them.

Thanks for the response Ken. Each of the kids created a profile on the xbox, and named it their name. Then I created the Live accounts using the computer. I thought that would be easier than trying to "type" on the xbox.

I tried to login to that Live account from one of the kid's profiles, and got the message that essentially said the gamertag did not match. I then renamed the xbox profile on the console, to match the gamertag of the Live account, and tried again. Got the same message.

I suppose I am saying I am trying to "merge" the two profiles. I didn't really view the xbox profile as an "account" and assumed it could eventually be linked to any Live account.

Does this mean I only have two choices:
1. Use the desired xbox profile, and create a new Live account through the console, or
2. Create a new console profile and somehow use the existing Live account.

Thanks.

A keyboard that uses USB or a wireless keyboard can be use on the 360.

An Xbox profile, and live account are the same thing essentially. You can take one of the old accounts and get it on live, or take one of the new accounts and use it.

Think of it like this. A long time ago you went down to your local bank and opened a checking account in person. You never signed up for online billpay. Recently you want to use the online portion so you went to your banks website. But instead of clicking the link to sign up for online billpay, you clicked to sign up for a new checking account. Then you got the new checking account setup with online billpay. The only problem is you don't see any of your money in the new account, so you are trying to find a way to merge the two checking accounts together.

OK, I guess I understand the bank analogy. Though, I think it is still a poor system. Microsoft doesn't (shouldn't) have any knowledge of the profiles on my console, so to link one to a Live account shouldn't be such an issue. Once that link is made, I understand it may not be easy or possible to change it.

Setting up the profiles on the Xbox seemed similar to the Mii's on the Wii.

I guess I will just setup a new console profile with the now existing Live account.

The profiles on the xbox are xbox live accounts, its all the same thing. You just have a live account without live service.
