 | people not following along due to replies to one person. I am honestly getting tired of people looking at their replies made out to them, with only the two posts singled out and thus making incorrect assumptions or nit picking because they don't follow the whole thread. Which sometimes it would be better to not point the reply to anybody in particular, but this forum software doesn't allow it. |

| I am not fully understanding your post. The forum allows a reply to a particular post, or a reply to someone that started the thread. If the thread wasn't started by someone, there would be no need to reply at all..so replying to the original person that started the thread seems realistic. |

| reply to jason_m I think I understand what the OP is complaining about. It is annoying to see replies from people that, had their authors bothered to read the thread, they would have seen what they said was already stated or addressed...or that the question was answered and discussion actually over. I saw one of those threads on here just yesterday.
Unfortunately, since AI forum software is still a pipedream, there is no realistic programming solution for weeding out ignorance and plain stupidity. An option for "duplicates an older post" in the Hey Mods report would be nice...but would surely be flamed-down by everyone who can't be bothered with reading threads before typing. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

Incorrect assumptions and nit-picking are the raison d'être of DSLR. Seriously, you've just described behavior you're going to see over and over again around here.
I wish I knew what to tell you other than that the forums can be both exasperating and exhilarating at the same time. Maybe the trick is to blow off the exasperating bits as best you can and not let it get to you? -- Joey? Do you like movies about gladiators? |

This forum software has a feature where you must select a reply button, and it points that post to that person. I think people, especially noobs are looking at their Updated Posts or because they get an email and thus they see only my post singled out with theirs so it may look like it is very directed at them, hence they can think I'm nit picking them...
I know some may stop at the words "nit pick" in my OP, but nit picking in general is not what I'm after, I know that can not be changed. I'm after the sort of issues caused by the "Reply to" feature, so it would be nice to at least have a way to reply and just to add to the thread and not have replies directed at anybody in particular. (Or if people could follow along the whole thread and make their replies in context with the thread!)
TEST! Since I "replied to" myself, let's see how many people don't even see this post. The exact opposite, I know. |

| There have been many discussions about this over the years, here are a few I found while doing a 2009+ search:
»Wild Crazy Idea »Reply to thread »Reply without a "reply to" ? »Always says "reply to" even though I don't want that
Now you mention replying to the topic in general, the "reply op" is really the best method to accomplish this. Since the topic is set by the original post, by replying to the OP you are in fact replying to the topic in general. If you're not replying to another member, or to the original post, then it's got to be off-topic, right?
The system here works well, once you get the hang of it. Requests for change either weren't articulated well enough or just didn't gain enough traction to warrant a change. Read up on some of the previous discussions, they probably explain it a little better than I am. |

 | reply to jason_m "Reading is FUNdamental." If some people aren't going to bother to read to whom a reply is directed when it hits their /postlist, there's nothing [wothwhile] you can do with software to force them. One can reply to a specific post, or one can reply to the thread... it's very simple, and very simple to learn. But, yeah, some people are still going to screw it up and/or remain "clueless" as to how it works. Grin and bear it. -- "Sorry for not responding to your post, but either I haven't seen it yet, or what you said was so devoid of substance that I found it utterly uninteresting." |
