 | WNDR3700V2 Terrible range? Hello all,
my old WRT54G decided to fail a few hours ago so I picked up a new Netgear 3700v2 to replace it..
Now the wired connection is great but the 2.4/5ghz have terrible range/speed.. I mean, it is absolutely horrible.
(with wireless router in the basement and me 2 floors up) With 2-3/5 bars on the WRT54G, I was getting 20-25mbps.. With 4-5/5 bars on the 3700v2, I am getting 9mbps..
Now moving the 3700v2 around has yielded a top speed of 13mbps but it is still miles away from the 20-25 I was getting and is way the hell off of the 50mbps connection my modem has.
/rant
question: Is there any known issues/fixes for the 3700v2? *I am using the most up to date firmware if that matters.
Thanks for any help you can give me |

 | reply to Cro My house has 3 floors, basement, landing and upper floor. My cable line is in my basement and any attempts to use a different cable line on a different floor have been fruitless as (I assume) the signal quality is too poor..
I have no idea how to proceed then.. I was hoping this new router would be simpler than my old WRT54G but it seems I may be out of luck.
Any ideas would be appreciated still and thanks Mozerd for the reply. |

Any ideas would be appreciated still and thanks Mozerd for the reply. IS your ISP connection via your Telephone company or is via your Cable TV company?
You need to be more specific as to why any attempts to use a different cable line on a different floor have been fruitless.
There are a number of ways that you could be accommadated -- the chepest way would be for your ISP to move or install their access line to your uppermost floor. |

 | I am using Teksavvy Cable. So I am assuming my Cable TV company (As Tek resells Rogers) |

 | I really appreciate the help and I will keep that in mind..
As it stands, I think I am going to try to return this router or sell it.. Unless I can find some solution to its abysmal range/speed issue.
@Mozerd: It isn't that I don't want to take your advice.. I just don't want to go through all this trouble for a setup that already worked perfectly for years prior. |

Perfectly understandable ...:) Please understand that the Netgear N router is a very different beast than your Linksys ... |

1 edit | as a last ditch effort... could it be my wireless card? My old card worked but it is an 802.11g.. If I switch it for a new wireless N card, will that help my speed?
My card is a D-Link DWL-G520 2.4ghz 802.11g |

mozerdLight Will Pierce The DarknessPremium,MVM join:2004-04-23 Nepean, ON | Yes, you should try the Netgear WNDA3100 network adapter .. This adapter should improve your range |
|
 1 edit | Haha, isn't it easier/cheaper to get a PCI / PCI-E type? The WNDA3100 is a USB adapter.
EDIT: Not that I don't like your idea, I just like keeping all that stuff together inside the computer. |

mozerdLight Will Pierce The DarknessPremium,MVM join:2004-04-23 Nepean, ON 1 edit | Yes you could go with the PCI VERSION [Netgear WN311B] but IMO you will get better results with the USB version. I also suggest that if you do get the USB version make sure to use the USB interface on the front of your desktop because that will provide much more 'AIR' for the signals.
If you go with the Netgear WN311B make sure to mount the ezternal antennae housing as high up as possible and away from any large metal surfaces |
|
 | Sadly I am rocking an NZXT phantom full tower case.. So I have no USB ports on the front. Only on the back and the top |

Only on the back and the top The Top is fine as long as the Tower is not placed in an area that is obstructed like under a desk. The idea is to give the hidden antennae LOTS of AIR. The very same applies to the PCI version that I linked for you. |

 | Ah ok, I might just pick one up.. I updated my firmware for my wireless card and I am getting 19mbps now so that is better but it is a good proof of concept for my card just not working well with new tech.
My case is located on-top of my desk and the top usb ports are beside the wall with an angled ceiling just above it (like the USB stick would probably be touching it.. stupid ventilation). When I get a little more money I will see about picking up one of these USB adapters.. Hopefully it increases my speed.
(I tested my Asus Transformer near my computer and it gets 15-28mbps depending on the angle and it supposedly uses 802.11N) |

(I tested my Asus Transformer near my computer and it gets 15-28mbps depending on the angle and it supposedly uses 802.11N) The USB Network stick operates well when it has at least 2 feet of vertical separation --- so it cannot be close to any obstacles on a vertical basis.
Your Asus Transformer [very nice tablet ] operates on the 2.4Ghz band so make sure that you have no other 'b,g' gear transmitting near-by [including mouse and/or keyboard and 2.4 wireless Phones] otherwise performance will be very poor + BlueTooth will cause degradation [I would turn BlueTooth off]. Also your portable wirless gear will perform much better when they are 'not to close to the WNDR3700' -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |

 | Yeah, I understand the tablet wont be a perfect test of things to come seeing as the ability to move is a plus and a minus.. I might have had Bluetooth on but other than that, there is no other 2.4GHZ device in my house.. At least I believe my cordless phones to be 5GHZ but you never know what they are actually rated at.
I think I might have a USB 3.0 plate I could put in the front.. If not, I can probably get a USB extender for cheap. |

A USB extender is an excellent idea -- get one that is at least 6 feet [1.5 meters] long and try and find a USB stand that would allow the USB stick to be VERTICAL. The stand LOOKS like this -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |

| reply to Cro My WNDR3700V1 is located basement north. I need to keep the router where it is for wired servers down there.
The signal for devices second story south isn't satisfactory. We are trying a Netgear range extender now which seems to be working.
Netgear has a newer model now which is dual band. If I were buying today I would get that one.

Since it is just out, it may take awhile to ship, though.

You would get much better wireless performance if you used the Netgear Powerline adapters for your wired servers over the range extender and move your WNDR3700 to the top floor and centrally located in your home due to the way that wireless signals propergate. If you are very satisfied with how the Netgear 'N' range extender performs in ur situation then that's great. -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |
