 | reply to Cro I too recently tried this router as well as the Asus RT-U66N. I originally had a D-Link DIR-655 A3 (single band 2.4Ghz) that would act a little flaky with my older Macbook Pro. The day I got my new Macbook Pro, it wouldn't stay connected (until I found the right settings to satisfy all my wireless devices). I figured I have been reading about these super fast dual-band routers and wanted to upgrade to something more stable and faster.
Before these new routers, I did a few speed tests and my D-Link gave me about 20Mbs when I was on the opposite side of my house from the router (connected at 144Mbs as per Network Utility).
I first tried the Asus and my wireless speeds topped out about 9Mbs (connected at 450Mbs), I even tried speedtest.net on a wired computer and it too was slow. I returned it pretty quick, since it was way worse for me than the D-Link.
I replaced it with a WNDR3700v2 and tried the same test again. My speeds were a little better, I topped out at about 12.5Mbs - 15Mbps (connected at 300Mbs) but still way shy of what the D-Link was giving me. I tried both 2.4 and 5Ghz to see if it made a huge difference, it didn't. I swapped the D-Link and my speeds went back to normal again.
I guess until this D-Link dies, I will keep it and hope that the next router I get shows me some better love. There isn't any point "upgrading" my router when they upgrades are actually slower. The WNDR3700v2 was very easy to configure and supported everything I was looking for, so perhaps in the future another model similar to this will be my next router. |
