| [Pets] "As You Like It": Act II, scene vii Good evening!
Lemme see if I can remember everything that has happened in the last 24 hours.
1.) Growling/snapping isn't tolerated here. These are your new brothers and sisters, so be nice to them. 2.) Leashes are not foreign objects designed to trip and strangle you. You have to learn leash manners so that you can go for walks instead of running wild in a trailer park. Yes, once you are good boys on leashes, Mommy will think about taking you to the park. 3.) You do NOT pee in the house!!! 4.) Yes, you do get a huge Air Kennel for just the two of you! And with a big, comfy blanket in there, and a screw-on water bowl so that you can't dump it and splash in the water. 5.) Very good boys to *not* eat the cats! Not that Abigail would let you get away with it. Yes, she did make a 90-pound Labrador sit down after slapping him. Let that be a lesson to you. 6.) Yes, Mommy will feed you separately until you settle in. Yes, I know they get different food. You have to be converted to your new food so that Mommy doesn't have to clean up 'the runs' from the two of you. 7.) Yes, the needle pricked at the vet, but now you're legal for St. Louis County. 8.) Yes, Pooh, the vet really did say you have to lose 4-5 pounds. And see? It didn't kill you to walk on the scale. And I'm really sorry that you screamed bloody murder and peed all over yourself while getting your nails trimmed, and that it only took three of us to hold you down while Doc clipped your nails. And I'm really sorry you didn't like the cookie that I gave to you afterwards. Dusty did enjoy it. 9.) Yes, Tigger, Doc really did say you have a broken hip. I know it hurts. The little shot was to make you sleepy, so that it wouldn't hurt to get your x-rays. Oh, you liked that little nap and waking up with Mommy right there? Good boy; so did I. No, you're not too fat like your brother, so you don't have to go on a diet. Yes, Mommy is going to get your little leg fixed, so that you can run and play just like other little doggies. When? Just as soon as I call to see if you're going to a local clinic or to Missouri University. What? No, you don't get to wear a cap and gown and get a diploma. What a funny little boy you are! 10.) Yes, Pooh. Yes, Tigger does have to wear a harness. Why? Just because he can back out of his collar due to his neck being wider than his head. No, Pooh. No, it's not because he's fat. Just the opposite. You want a harness too? A green one? Only if it's adjustable. Remember your diet. Okay, we can go to the doggie store later. 11.) Yes, you do have to go to see Doc again. Yes, for the rest of your shots. Yes, Pooh, you do have to learn to get your nails trimmed. No, I'd rather you didn't scream and pee again. It was messy and embarrassing for Mommy. I'm sorry we all laughed at you. (Ha--not!) 12.) Yes, Dusty went to the vet with us today too, to get his bite wound drained and get more antibiotics. Yes, a big bad doggie bit him. I know! He's smaller than you are, but you have to be very kind to him while his face heals up. Plus, he's older, so you have to be gentle with him. Yes, someday you'll be 9 years old too. No, neither one of you are ever going to weigh 9 pounds again, Pooh!
So thereby hangs the "tail", so to speak. The boys are adjusting and settling in nicely.
Lemme know what you think of my story. *grin*

| OK, I figured out by first sentence in chapter 2 of your story that you really are out of your mind courageous enough to bring the care of two new puppies into that rather huge family of yours!
After I say thanks a whole huge gob for loving the critters so much, saying thanks for the pics 'cause your new babes are adorable, telling you this is a great story and casting a look of wonder in your direction, I think I'll go take a nap. Just thinking of all you must do to care for those animal people of yours makes me very, very, tired.
Oh and I bet they already know they won a lottery. -- Join Team Helix * I am praying for these friends . | | squirtcacatne alces in silvis?Premium,MVM join:2004-04-27 Out Grazing kudos:4 | reply to jopfef So do Kanga and Roo have big parts in the next act? | | santyDon't Follow Me, I'M Lost TooPremium,MVM join:2001-06-10 Wilmington, IL kudos:1 | reply to jopfef Nice little story. Re: [Pets] "As You Like It": Act II, scene vii I read. I laughed. I continued to read. I continued to laugh. This story painted a very vivid picture. | reply to jopfef Best guess on the boys is Chihuahua (as exhibited by Tigger), Beagle (Pooh looks like one from the front and side), and whatever passed by at the time. They are brothers, per the rescue lady. They were an emergency rescue; I got the call very late at night and went to Illinois the next evening to pick them up. I'm amazed at how quickly they are settling in here; must be their youth.
Called to get appointments for orthopedic evaluations today. Just for a lark, I have an appointment at a very fancy clinic next week. Dr. Roberts is a Board Certified Companion Animal vet, did Missey's eyes 16 years ago, and to this day, she has had no problems. So I'm doing this out of curiosity, to see how much he'll quote me. Back then, he was just starting his business, and was very reasonably priced; his clinic was in a strip mall. I suspect that it won't be that reasonable anymore, judging by the size of his clinic building now, the number of doctors on staff, and the location. Besides, Doc and I have a bet going on just how big the quote will be.
Second appointment is for the vet that Doc wants to do Tig's surgery. Board Certified Orthopedic vet who does this type of surgery all the time. I called to make the appointment, they took my name and number, and said they'd call back in a few minutes. Not five minutes later, the phone rang, and it was Dr. Zeiss, the surgeon! We had a very nice conversation about the x-ray results and what Doc said needed to be done, and he quoted me $500 for the surgery. I nearly fell over!!! (He was very kind and nice to talk to, and I felt very comfortable just speaking to him on the phone.) Everything I've heard and researched has been $1000+ to do the surgery that Tig needs, including what Doc said -- although he did say that Dr. Zeiss is very reasonably priced. I forgot to tell him that Tig has to be neutered at the same time; that'll be extra, but no big deal for those two little things.
Third and final (less likely...) option would be a trip up to University of Missouri's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, to see the orthopedic specialist at the small animal clinic. Rumor has it they would charge close to $1500 for the surgery; I find that hard to believe. I've had a dog up there before (medical issue), and it was very reasonable. I've also had horses up there for surgery at the Equine Center, and it only cost me $800 to fix both of my filly's back legs back then. Jolie's colic surgery was another deal altogether; she was 8 months pregnant when they did surgery on her. She lived to a ripe old age, and that colt that was born a few months later stood at stud in Florida for a long time. However, that was a long time ago.
So, next week will be interesting. Best bet is that Tig will end up having surgery here with Dr. Zeiss, which is fine with me. Not too far to drive, and I can try to get it scheduled on my days off so that I can have some time at home with the boys after Tig's surgery.
And on that happy note, the updates will continue as needed.
And yes, they really are cute, aren't they??? I'll try to get some better pictures in the daylight. -- "I can't save them all, but I sure as hell CAN help move them to safety." - Jo
