[BC] Help! Shaw phone removed now Enterphone doesn't work!

I'm hoping someone can help me fix this problem quickly for my tenants.

History: Condo in 16 year old building with Enterphone. Enterphone always worked properly when Telus phone was installed and continued to work after Telus line was cancelled. At the time cable and internet were both with Shaw.
Condo was empty during renovations (no telephone/cable/internet service) then rented out. Tenant had Shaw home phone, cable and Internet installed and when they moved out they took the Shaw box with them.
New tenants moved in several months later (tried to sell..don't want to be a landlord!) and had Telus TV and Internet installed. They have cell phones and did not get a phone line.

Problem: Enterphone does not work anymore! Had a lengthy conversation with Shaw. (Didn't figure Telus had anything to do with this.) The first person I spoke to didn't have a clue...went through a couple of people before I got to one that told me that the resident manager needed to reprogram the Enterphone.

The property manager insists that this is Shaw's problem. I checked with an Enterphone company and they agreed. They mentioned a "digimax" unit.

It seems the guy at Shaw was either less than honest with me or he assumed this is one of the "newer" enterphone systems that phone numbers can be programmed into. I've got another call into them now (current wait times are only 52 minutes! ) I suspect that convincing them to send someone out to fix this at no charge will be like pulling teeth. Especially since we are no longer Shaw customers at all.

Can someone please tell me if we can remove this "digimax" box ourselves, and if we do that will that restore the enterphone service? I don't care if it only works for one phone jack. I just need the tenant to stop bugging me about having to go to the front door to let people in.

Thanks in advance for any advise!

I'm not sure what the digimax device is they're referring to, but being that you know longer have phone service with any company the responsibility would lie with the building manager. Neither Shaw nor Telus installed the phone lines. Yes if you were to have a provider they would come out and fix it as a courtesy(at least Shaw would), but even then it's not technically their responsibility.

Sorry, I don't agree that it's not a Shaw issue. The Enterphone worked before Shaw modified the wiring when they installed the home phone, so Shaw should restore it to what it was before.

And it turns out that they agree and are sending out a technician at no charge on Monday!

The customer service rep told me that Shaw should have put everything back to the way it was when they removed the equipment but when I told her that the tenant removed the box themselves when they moved out, she booked an appointment. It was almost too easy.

If I remember correctly, the Digimax device, allows two phone services to be connected to 'one' telephone, usually when porting a number.

When the B side of the box recieves a telephone ring signal, it switches to the B service.

Enables Shaw to come in, install the phone service, and then Port the number sometime in the future, and it should just work.

There are many types of Enterphones, have you ever used it, with no active telephone service? Some of them dial a phone number, which would then ring your telephone line inside your unit.

Hopefully it is simple, and the tech will be able to fix it.

Digimax

digimax switch allows the enterphone line and a shaw line to work at the same time, what it does is when someone downstairs enters your number it will come up on the existing pair (aka original telus lines) and give the normal ring usually 2 short rings to let user know someone is at the door.

When a normal call comes in it uses the shaw pair and goes to the phone for the normal ring.

What the shaw tech would have done is disconnected the existing lines from the wall jack and set it up so it tied into the digimax.

If i understand correctly, your ex tenant tampered with Shaw's equipment? If that was anyone else, then they would charge you for a tech to come to your place. You got lucky, imo

In my experience, Shaw tells the customer to remove the telephone hardware and bring to the office, in order to disconnect service, when moving, has been my experience they tell the customer to take the hardware with them, or they will charge them for the SDP modem.

Kevin is correct,

If they do not take the digital phone box with they will be charged, however they don't have to bring the digimax switch those will be installed again at no charge if needed at new address.

if by telephone hardware, you mean just the modem and digimax, that makes sense. however, if someone messes with the actual jack or telephone box , i know we'd be liable. The Shaw tech said that if we ever decide to ditch Shaw home phone, then a tech will be required to pay us a visit to redo things as they were prior to Shaw modifying the jack et al.

The telephone hardware shaw installed, is what I was refering to.

No one would expect Shaw to charge a customer for hardware they didn't install, and be required to return it to Shaw.

shah does not tamper the equipment, they simply plug into the demarcation jack or an existing wall jack. depending on how the tenants phone is wired, he could have his cordless phone plugged directly into the shaw tel phone adaptor, buypassing the existing wiring which is the customers responsibility anyways, which is likely how his enterphone is connected to, i dont see anything shaw did wrong
