| [Equipment] Having a hard time setting up External Antenna. Hi there - I live in the hills and recently signed up for Verizon's 3G data plan. I have a hotspot, but I was only receiving 0-2 bars of service.
I ordered an external, directional antenna, and I called Verizon to figure out in which direction to point it. I have it set up on our patio, and I thought I had everything figured out when I was clocking in at 3-4 bars, and 1200 b/s download. (I was testing this outside on my iPod through the mobile speed test.) I thought I was doing great, because I had only been getting 600 TOPS before.
But within minutes, and no change except for me bringing the hotspot inside and running the cable under the door, the speed has dropped to an abysmal level. How the hell could this have happened in such short a time? Now, no matter where I seem to aim it, I can't get much higher than 3-400 b/s.
ARGH. HELP. | | | Quick update:
By b/s I meant to type kb/s.
Also, I constantly go out to find a good signal with renewed effort, and then within a few minutes it will be gone again, down to 20 kb/s from 600-1000.

| reply to Tobi Would you care to specify exactly which model Verizon Hotspot, directional antenna, and antenna adapter cable you are using? If you are using any coaxial cable between the adapter cable and the antenna please tell us the length and type. It would also help to know the nearest intersection of two roads to get a useful idea of where you are approximately located.
Your statement about running the cable under a door is somewhat troubling, as even high quality coaxial cable can be degraded by crushing it between a door and the door sill or door jam. Normally it is recommended to drill a hole through the exterior wall and interior wall at a safe location, secure a piece of tubing as conduit in the hole, run the coaxial cable through that and seal it up to reduce air leakage.
Also, if you think you might be coming back to these forums in the future, it is usually better to use the edit function on an original post to update it with new information, if no one has replied to your post. That way, it still shows no replies, so that others know no one has tried to help you yet.
