If they had actually reduced the carriage fee to nearly free, you'd think Comcast would have moved it to Starter? I'm guessing they assumed it would be a big hit and kept the fees high, if not raised them.
From an article from the Chicago Sun-Times:
"Winfrey traveled to the companys Philadelphia headquarters in the hope that a little Oprah magic would result in handsome fees for her joint venture with Discovery Communications. But according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the meeting, Comcast executives not only rebuffed Winfrey but characterized her pitch as greedy for an unproven network."
"Today, major service providers including Comcast pay nothing for OWN, which is not unusual for a network with no ratings history. (Comcast declined comment.) But as Discovery is going without those fees, it has poured $254 million into funding the venture (far above its initial $189 million commitment)." The article can be found here »www.suntimes.com/entertainment/9···own.html
It doesn't matter where Comcast places the channel, that is all in the contract with Discovery Networks, the fact is, Comcast pays nothing for OWN. |

| reply to andyross OWN is owned by Oprah directly (most of the programming/content is produced by her Harpo Productions) - Discovery Networks of Silver Spring, MD (in their own building where Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road meet) is the distributor/minority shareholder; it's closer to the National Geographic deals with Fox Cable Networks (NatGeo owns the content, FCN distributes the channels and acts as middleman).
On the aspect of deals, there is *still* one between Comcast and FCN (even though Comcast is now majority shareholder of NBC/Universal) - how's that for weird? |
