Rogers hole home PVR - its OFFICIAL

just for the skeptics, the rogers hole home pvr is now official. its also called multi room pvr. it will share recordings with your other pvrs. anyways its official, and best of all, you will get fancy new rogers branded 16x9 ipg guide that might be filled with ads and bannors. yeah, we wanted those right?

Does the rogers whole home pvr have FOUR tunners like the one from Bell Fibe TV that's so amazing? AND
can the Rogers whole home pvr record up to 4 shows at the same time and play them back to 6 TVs in your home? Those are the questions burning in everyones ears.

Does anyone know the monthly cost on their boxes. Each HD PVR currently rents for 25$ per month. I got a notice stating there was a one-time 49.99 fee to have someone install the boxes but nothing mentioned about each boxes cost.

I know Bell charged 25 or so for the main box and 5 for each additional.

How about this one - Can you get the Rogers whole home PVR outside of "certain areas of Toronto", unlike Bell's?

Good point. I already have a wiring jungle - last thing I want or need is more wiring. I note that Rogers charges a one-time $49.xx fee for "professional installation" (required). I wonder where they will get professional installers? Just think about the nightmare of connecting so many remote devices to the WHPVR(s) - with coax?? What is up with that?

If it's using MOCA, just 1 per box. The WHPVR signal will piggy-back over the same coax cable used for the live feed to each box.

The alternative is they might be using ethernet, though I suspect it's MOCA.

LOL. According to the two grinning idiots in the video, it uses existing wiring.

Apparently, the install protocol requires a POE filter in the demarc box, and a check of the tap levels. I guess that explains the $50 install fee.

You can network up to two Cisco 8642 with the Rogers whole home pvr service. So theoretically you can record up to 4 shows at once. And yes you can play them back to up to 6 networked TVs.

2 PVR's to accomplish the same objective at double the cost -- that's a very poor value proposition -- Looks to me like Bell wins.

Except far, far more people can get the Rogers one than can get the Bell one.

And the Rogers one doesn't require you to subscribe to Rogers internet, unlike the Bell one.

Sharing of recordings is great but if you don't have a PVR at each TV then you won't be able to pause live TV but only recorded shows.

Well there are advantages to both systems. With bell, if you're recording 4 programs at once. Nobody can watch any other live streams. With the Rogers system, you can potentially record 4 programs at once and watch up to six additional live feeds simultaneously. Obviously this comes at a much higher cost. Perhaps Rogers will eventually feel the heat from Fibe's ability to record 4 shows at once and offer PVRs at a lower cost. Also the cisco equipment is is capable of IPTV so Rogers could theoretically transition to an IPTV platform down the road, and the number of tuners would no longer be a problem.

What the hell does this mean?

These upgrades will be made available at no additional charge to customers with Enhanced HD Boxes and PVRs.

So anybody with an 8300 or and older Digital Box is SOL?

Basically the 8300HD PVR & 3250/4250HD are not supported. I guess there isnt enough cpu/ram in them.

They slightly upgraded the 8300HD's guide/OSD to higher resolution last year. But the layout is still the same. It does have the better search function though if you press * (star) on the remote. Even my old 3250HD has it actually.

So I think that's the extend of the visual upgrades we'll see on these older boxes. I have one of the newer cisco boxes in the house so i'll see when the guide comes out.

It is just a matter of going to a Rogers store to exchange a rented 8300 for a newer Cisco unit? I'd imagine now that there is a reason to, a lot of people will be wanting to get rid of the older 8300.
