| Foxconn, Shenzen, and what goes on there One man's story.
I haven't listened to the entire thing yet, but this is a must listen to any hardware fetishists so we can know what it takes to make our goodies. It ins't a pretty picture, but form your own take on it, just know that football stadiums of workers make the things you love, and it is good to be aware of the people who make it all possible for you.

A list of what foxconn makes wound be a nice addition, ib4 sockets mines a lotus =D |

| reply to signmeuptoo I'm going to listen to the rest of it tonight, I listened with my brother as he drove me home last night. Yesterday was a very trying day, my brother has a son with cancer, and the other son may have it too, now. I was over there fixing his recovering his data and fixing his computer.
Evidently the Foxconn factory houses 100's of thousands of workers? My gosh. -- Join Teams Helix and Discovery. Rest in Peace, Leonard David Smith, my best friend, you are missed badly! | reply to signmeuptoo My "wife" in The Philippines worked for Mitsumi and the factory was nothing, from what I gather, like what they are building in Shenzen. (She was QC with floppy drive manufacture.) As little as she made, I think she made for than the workers in China, but I don't know that for a fact. I do know that where she lives, once you are past your mid twenties, jobs vaporize. -- Join Teams Helix and Discovery. Rest in Peace, Leonard David Smith, my best friend, you are missed badly! | "âApple never cared about anything other than increasing product quality and decreasing production cost,’ Mr Li told the New York Times. âWorkers’ welfare has nothing to do with their interests."
"A former Apple executive claimed that the company has had knowledge of labour abuses in some factories for four years - âand they’re still going on because the system works for us."

| reply to signmeuptoo Well, consider that workers are as young as 12 years, worked up to 36+ hour shifts (that we know of so far), can go to jail for complaining about their job, and some employers withhold pay for months. Since many of these workers take the jobs to help their families and send the money home, not getting paid and having family suffer freaks them out, and the employers know this, and manipulate.
If we don't fight, worker standards may fall like this in America. -- Join Teams Helix and Discovery. Rest in Peace, Leonard David Smith, my best friend, you are missed badly!
