PDXracerPremium join:2002-08-13 Grants Pass, OR | [crt/lcd] "monitor out of sync" on Compaq FS7600 I am running Ubuntu Linux on 4 year old Compaq machine, hooked up to this monitor.
All of a sudden, the screen went out, and came up with a "out of frequency range"
How do I get into Linux to change the resolution to see if monitor works. -- The path that leads to truth is littered with the bodies of the ignorant - Miyamoto Musashi |

Does Linux have a "safe mode" to change resolution? |

 | reply to PDXracer If the resolution wasn't being changed but the screen suddenly blanked then I think it more likely that you are having a hardware problem with your graphics card. If your monitor is displaying the out of frequency range message than it is less likely to be your monitor.
Try getting into your bios when you first turn the machine on. With compaq it might be the f10. If you can't see anything in the bios before you are even loading the OS then the problem isn't in linux and I wouldn't spend time trying to get into linux and alter your resolution. If you can see the bios then you should be able to see the grub loading menu. If it is not set to show the menu then you can hit esc or shift when you see the message that grub is loading the OS. There should then be options to choose recovery mode and possibly then a failsafe graphics option, depending on distro and version.
Again if you can't get into the bios and are seeing no signs of any splash screen, text, boot loader messages, etc. and are getting nothing but out of frequency range as soon as the machine is turned on then you appear to have a hardware problem and we will need to proceed from there. |
