| [DSL] Feel a bit baited-and-switched when trying to order Trying to help a friend out who wants the "DSL Fastest" package, 6000/768 speeds, which this page cheerfully offers at $19.95 per month with a 12-month contract in select AT&T areas.

When I enter the information for a number in Wilmette, Illinois, a nearby suburb of Chicago (847 area code, 920 prefix), I'm offered $29.95 monthly with a contract.
So I tried a few other numbers for a few other people I know in the state of Illinois, and other places. I've yet to hit on a "select" area.
I then called DSLExtreme and talked to an insincerely ingratiating person with the moniker of "Walter", who started every sentence with the same apology until I wanted to scream. I asked if there was a map where DSL Extreme offers this rate.
Is it for lineshare? Because that's what I wanted. Does it require an unbundled line or some other special thing to operate in an area that's got Uverse available? Or does this rate not exist beyond the first page for anyone in the state of Illinois?
I'm hoping someone can explain it to me here. I'm fairly reasonable as far as being a user goes. Thanks! |

dslx_nick join:2011-12-24 Chatsworth, CA kudos:11 | Got the IM, thanks. I checked, and unfortunately the pricing you're seeing there ($29.95) is accurate. We can add DSL to phone lines that are not currently getting DSL, that's not a problem and doesn't affect the pricing one way or another. The main factors involved are how well-developed the infrastructure is in the area and the prices we can get with the local telco (AT&T in this case). In many Verizon areas, we can offer higher speeds than in AT&T areas, but they also cost more, for example. |
