 | [BC] Slowness in Evenings Every night for the last two weeks the internet speed has dropped to less than half its usual speed. There is no reason on my end (same number of computers doing the same things as when speed is normal, no unaccounted for computers on the network) that I can determine for the drop. This drop renders Netflix and iTunes streaming unusable due to constant buffering and online gaming usless due to lag. I have been on the phone and chat with Telus 3 times to no avail.
The slow down starts sometime around 7PM and keeps up to later than 10:30PM. I haven't checked later than that, but it is always back to normal in the morning, when I don't need the speed.
Any known issues in Prince George, BC? |

 | Both. Given my previous conversations with Telus I have managed to rule out my hardware. It isn't anything on my network using the bandwidth. Nor is it someone hacking in as I disabled wireless for a while and the speed didn't increase.
It must be something from Telus' end. The symptoms are like an increased usage load, but I thought DSL didnt suffer from that. |

 | You could be in a GPON area where the connection is shared with the neighborhood just like cable is therefore more people could be on in the evening causing slowdown. |

The path back to the local wire center is not shared with anyone and can be likened to a star structure. Cable on the other hand is like a tree structure that keeps branching out. Normally the path from the wire center to the Internet is more than adequate to service the wire center, but in some cases Telus is using older equipment that wasn't specifically designed to handle IP traffic, and it can become congested. They will eventually upgrade the equipment, especially if they are receiving a lot of complaints. |

|
 | reply to Branflakes Most users don't realize there are different wiring technologies. They are just told that they have the fastest available. This precludes any further complaining and in places like Ashcroft and Lillooet, "you get what you're given" is all you can expect. No amount of complaining from the little itty bitty communities will shift the Telus giant from it's rock. |

 | reply to rizulli I'm in PG too. Same problems. Talked to Telus tech support - next to useless. Installer coming tomorrow - thinks it might be a defective modem - but at least willing to do something. Suggest you complain loud and bitterly and mention CRTC complaint as your next course of action. Likely they haven't got the infrastructure in place ot handle the amount of customers and won't admit it - but Telus is afraid of CRTC - so if I can't get any resolution tomorrow that's my next step. I'll let you know what happens. |

I'll let you know what happens. Telus is not afraid of the CRTC. They just don't like the statistics that the CRTC keeps on customer complaints. Unfortunately, Internet service is not a regulated service, so you won't get much help from the CRTC. |

 | reply to rizulli I am in Edmonton, and have precisely the same problem with Netflix to my iPad during the same time of day. I haven't contacted customer service, as I want to see how this discussion plays out. |

 | Wireless speeds can never be guaranteed as there are a large number of things that can negatively affect wireless performance. If you have a large number of wireless networks in range you could experience slower speeds during peak times. |
|
 | reply to JammerMan79 Ness Lake. Installer replaced modem, but also noticed it was set to powersave mode in the evening. He removed that setting. Was better last night. Speed slows down when logged into netflix - whether streaming or not, but recovers once logged out of netflix - so suspect netflix is always using bandwith when you're logged in. Anyhow, check the modem for powersave mode. |
