| Way to force boot from USB Flash drive? I am wondering if anyone knows a way for me to force an older PC to boot from a flash drive.
It's an HP m7769n media edition PC. The DVD drive has been acting a bit flaky so I want a way to rescue it, should I need to, with a bootable USB flash drive.
In the boot options of the BIOS, I only have 4 options; floppy group (there isn't one), CD-Rom group, Hard drive group, and network group.
Neither my USB external hard drive, or the flash drive show up as hard drives in the BIOS. However, if I actually unplug the internal hard drive, it will boot to the external USB hard drive. I have a Linux install on a partition on it, and it will boot that. So it seems that booting to USB is sort of recognized as possible. Any ideas? -- Any claim that the root of a problem is simple should be treated the same as a claim that the root of a problem is Bigfoot. Try pressing F9 when the HP logo is up and see if you can select the USB. A USB device will need to be connected on and when you try this. -- When will the people realize that with DRM they aren't purchasing anything? |

Couldn't see the Flash drive in the list of hard drives in the BIOS, but if I hit escape (not F9) for the boot manager on boot, it was an option to boot from that (I used a live Ubuntu). Worked like a charm.
Thanks. -- Any claim that the root of a problem is simple should be treated the same as a claim that the root of a problem is Bigfoot. Simplicity and Bigfoot are found in the real world with about the same frequency. David Wong |
