They are failing. Paterno probably should have been let go over his lackluster actions in the child abuse case. But he should have been let go many months earlier than he was. Why was he let go when he was? Because he challenged the actions and coverup by the trustees in the press and not because he didn't act aggressively enough when the incident occurred. The trustees were notified about the case months earlier, but did nothing. They claimed they didn't understand the problem. But they did nothing about finding out more about it either.
Paterno passed the buck. His superiors decided sticking their head in the sand was best way to go. And the trustees ratified the "ignore it and it will go away" plan. The trustees now are just trying to lay off the whole thing on scapegoats for their own incompetence.

Penn State trustees say they decided to oust Joe Paterno in part because the football coach didn't meet a moral obligation to do more to alert authorities about a child sex abuse allegation against a retired assistant coach.
Trustees interviewed Thursday by The Associated Press also cited statements from Paterno in the days and hours leading to his dismissal Nov. 9 after nearly a half-century of leading the Nittany Lions that they felt challenged the Board of Trustees' authority. Board members saw that as inappropriate
A day after the graduate assistant, Mike McQueary, came to see him, Paterno relayed the accusations to his superiors, one of whom oversaw campus police. Board members didn't think that was enough.
given a short briefing about Sandusky months earlier by school President Graham Spanier and general counsel Cynthia Baldwin. That session lasted roughly 7 minutes and provided few insights, trustees said.
Since then, some alumni and former players have been questioning the actions of the trustees.
With Spanier in attendance, general counsel Cynthia Baldwin had briefed the board about the grand jury investigation into Sandusky in May. "Blaming Joe Paterno for the failure of administration officials and the board to properly investigate Jerry Sandusky is unjustified," Paterno's lawyer, Wick Sollers, said in a statement to The New York Times. In another statement, the group Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship said the board's comments have "done nothing but raise additional questions."
"We can conclude, that consequently, their hasty and panicked damage control efforts in the first days of November, and the uncomfortable position they found themselves in, being caught flat-footed, instead of in a proactive leadership position, led to the unjust firing of Joe Paterno, without so much as a conversation, let alone complete due process," the group's statement said.
Other critical alumni have called for wholesale changes in the board's makeup, and more transparency into how the board operates. -- The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, I'm from the government and I'm here to help. »www.politico.com/2012-election/

Penn State University will undergo yet another leadership change, this time at its highest level.
The board's chairman, Steve Garban, and vice chairman, John Surma, both announced on Friday afternoon that they would not seek another term as chair and vice chair.
Karen Peetz, chief executive officer of financial market and treasury services for The Bank of New York Mellon, was elected the new chairperson. A little while before the meeting Paterno went public to say the Board should not spend one thought on him, since he'd resign at the end of the year. In other words, he thought he had enough clout with the fans and media that he could decide when he'd leave (at the end of the season), that he could announce it to the public, and that the board would have to go along.

quote: Im not 31 years old trying to prove something to anybody, he said. I know where I am. This is where he is: wracked by radiation and chemotherapy, in a wheelchair with a broken pelvis, and shocked and saddened as he struggles to explain a breakdown of devastating proportions.
quote: Almost as difficult for Paterno to answer is the question of why, after receiving a report in 2002 that Sandusky had abused a boy in the shower of Penn States Lasch Football Building, and forwarding it to his superiors, he didnt follow up more aggressively. I didnt know exactly how to handle it and I was afraid to do something that might jeopardize what the university procedure was, he said. So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did. It didnt work out that way.

| reply to Romney2012 said by Romney2012: But he should have been let go many months earlier than he was. Many years earlier is more correct. Paterno by his own admission lacked not only comprehension of what was going in his program, but had lost the capacity to handle it appropriately.
PSU and any institution should question the mental competence of those in responsible positions who are over the age of 70 or so. He reiterated that McQueary was unclear with him about the nature of what he saw and added that even if McQueary had been more graphic, hes not sure he would have comprehended it.
You know, he didnt want to get specific, Paterno said. And to be frank with you I dont know that it would have done any good, because I never heard of, of, rape and a man" |

Paterno off respirator; near death It soon won't matter to Paterno what the Trustees do or what comes of the investigations in to Penn State actions over the abuse scandal. Word is he is very close to death from lung cancer and was taken off his respirator. His family was summoned to the hospital.
»eye-on-collegefootball.blogs.cbs···34494852
Onward State, the student-run Penn State website, reported on Saturday that Paterno had been taken off his respirator that morning, according to a source close to the family. Further, a report by Tom McAndrew of Blue White Illustrated indicates that Paterno's extended family has been summoned to the hospital.
Mike Sisak of the Citizens' Voice in Wilkes-Barre is reporting that Paterno is "near death."
