Dsl and Phone Line

Hello, I am a senior citizen on a fixed Low Income, I now have dsl with basic phone service, I am paying 50.00 a month but it expires in March, If I cannot get this renewed and I cannot afford more a month, I heard I can discontinue my basic phone service and still have dial tone for the dsl. Although I dont want to do this! Is this true?.

do not do this (they will charge $10 for no phone). instead contact your foodstamp or medical assistance office. Ask them to send you the lifeline papers. that will take down phone costs and knock taxes off the bill. For the lowest bill have your local phone service changed to measured . You get 90 minutes local OUTGOING calls. This doubles with lifeline. You get unlimited incoming calls . Oh and if you don't need it drop long distance. You can still buy prepaid long distance cards and use those you just won't have 1 plus area code and 7 digit dialing but you will save long distance access fees and minimum long distance requirements some carriers charge.

I already have a safelink cell phone with tracfone, so I dont think I can get lifeline too, but maybe I could look into the "service changed to measured" that you mentioned, 90minutes a month is plenty for me I very rarely use the phone. If I could do this, would I still be able to get the internet for 14.99 a month? Thank You

Re: Safelink versus Lifeline: Compare and Contrast

What are the similarities and differences between Safelink and Lifeline?

Hello Tom: Well from what I heard, you cannot get both because they both use your Medicad, SSI, food stamp situations, and I am entitled to one or the other (note not sure, this is what I heard)? If I could keep my bill at the 50.00 dollars a month for basic phone and internet, everything would be ok, but in the past when I tried to stay at the same deal, they always seem to what to add something I guess, thinking they can squeeze more out of me than I can afford? If there is a way to talk to someone about keeping the same deal, please let me know? Thank You

as far as the $14.99 promotional DSL which was for the first year if that year is running out your DSL will go up a few dollars. I'm unsure if it's $19.95 or $24.95 and may depend on market area. If this increase is unacceptable to could try an alternate DSL carrier (like DSLextreme) but keep in mind verizon still has to maintain the lines. These alternate carriers usually offer deals to new customers. CAVEAT: Things can go wrong trying to switch leaving you without internet service for weeks. Use caution if this is your only internet access .

Here in DC, Verizon has their "Double-Play" offerings that have combined wireline phone & DSL $29.99 for unlimited local/regional calling and .5-1mbps; $44.99 for unlimited local/regional and 1.1-15mbps; and $54.99 for unlimited local/nationwide and 1.1-15 mbps. I would guess that similar deals are available in Philly. Typically there is a $5/mo discount for placing the order online. You may also be able to get a discounted Senior rate. Try verizon.com and see what is available at your service location.

Ok well anyway my bundle is up on March 13. is it possible to transfer to this new bundle for 29.99 smoothly, if so how?

when I call the regular verizon phone number for internet service, they seem to get things all balled up and and put charges on the bill that are out of sight. Before I got the last bundle straightened out at the beginning, they were sending me bills for like 189.00 dollars and more!
I would like to just transfer to this new bundle and continue my bill as usuall, can this be done?

Is there a supervisor I can reach somehow?

You should be able to do it all online. Tell it you're an existing customer, provide the information, choose the package you want, and that should do it. Be sure to review before submitting to make sure it didn't add any "extra" services like antivirus or gaming (just uncheck them). Don't add any extra services or calling features (or remove the built-in ones like 3-way calling, call waiting and voicemail) to the order. You should receive a confirmation email within a couple of hours. Hold on to that.

It should be completely seamless with no interruption of service. I did have to call up and scold them the first 2 bills after my bundle changed for screwing up the price and adding additional services I didn't order. That's why it's important to hold onto the confirmation email and other correspondence you get from them about the order. Their computers have a tendency to choke on changes to accounts that are "older" (like mine, which is 20 years)...so it's important to keep an eye on bills and call them right away if there's something that doesn't look right.

I would hold off until around March 1, which should have you clear of any "early termination" penalty (typically there isn't any within the last month, but they might do things differently in other areas). The service changes should not require a premises visit...it's all in software. Your calling service changes should be effective within 24 hours; the DSL in 3-7 days (if there's a speed change involved, though they might still have a separate date for that since they are changing the "label" on the name of the service you have)

On your first bill, expect to see a lot of gibberish about "partial month" credits and charges. That's where the screwups tend to occur. Overall, the new bill should work out to less than what you are currently paying. Make sure you see the $5 online order credit in the detail.

Unless you called and they had to make corrections, your second bill should show just the bundle and the $5 credit (plus the usual below-the-line taxes and "because we can fees.")

Even though its a contract until March 13th I made sure I have the option to cancel at anytime, so is it a still wait until March 1st??
Also, when I click on the bundle site it asked me if I am already a customer and every time I say yes, I fill out what I am asking for, which is the 29.00 bundle, then when I hit SUBMIT, I keep getting a HTTP/501/505 error screen,
Here is the site, >>>

Their site has been doing that for months now. They broke something on the backend with their last site update that relates to accounts.

Check your current contract details to see what it says about termination. Some have penalties, some don't. I have no way of figuring that out for you. If there's no penalty, do it now and get the savings starting Feb.

You have FiOS available at your address? Sweet! If not, that error could be something on their end when they transfer you to the "Sorry, sucker, no FiOS for you! You get our plain-old-copper offering instead." However, that error could be a problem with your browser. If you are using a browser older than Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 6 then you should upgrade the browser (and make sure your system is up-to-date with all patches). Or, use a different computer that has a more recent browser (but make sure it's trustworthy and that you log-out when you're finished).

I wasn't aware of that. In that case, OP should call them on the phone and request the $5 online credit since their site is broken and the order can't be placed online.

Well, to be fair the phone reps won't honor that deal, so to speak. The website will eventually work, however it takes a lot of refreshes. You just need to hope it doesn't break again when you try to submit the order

I tried Firefox browser, I said I was already a customer and this is what I get now>>

Please contact the Verizon Local Business Office
We're sorry, we are unable to continue your order at this time.
Please try again later or contact your local Verizon office for assistance.
1 800 - VERIZON (1 800 - 837 - 4966)

On my present contract, there is a notation that I can cancel anytime. it maybe that they want me to do that first or wait til nearer to my expiration date of March 13th, I just want it to be a smooth transition (not like last time)
They have a habit of telling you what you want to hear but when get the bill its always hirer. Thats why I would like to do it online, so it is in writting for me. That way no misunderstandings, What do yu guys thinks???

FWIW i have been down this road of trying to bundle. I have just basic landline no long distance no calling features and UNBUNDLED 3 meg DSL (marketed 1.1-3 meg plan) . I have tried to bundle it instead to get the unlimited local and long distance. I was told those offers are for new customers only (and then they try to stick / ram FiOS down my throat). However YMMV. I just left it alone. P.S. i also get call the buisness office when trying online.
