| [DIRECTV] Considering Directv I'm currently have U-Verse and looking to switch. Direct has that HMC receiver that can record 5 streams. Where now I can do 4 with U-Verse.
Cheaper the first 2 years and then same for what I'm paying now TV wise with AT&T. Considering switching to Comcast for internet/voip or stay with AT&T.
I used to have DISH a long time ago but never had Direct. Just wanted opinions on service. How big is the on demand selection, more so kids selection.
With this HMC can you watch what ever you've recorded outside the house via laptop, tablet or phone?
TIA! |

| reply to gdm The On Demand is pretty robust... I have never had a problem finding free programming the kids want to watch.
With DirecTV you can take your recordings with you, if you get the NOMAD device. It allows you to take your recorded content and move it to your smartphone or laptop. With that though, you have to order it directly though DTV (not installed / serviced by techs) and it's $150.
Free Workaround: The DirecTV2PC software allows you to watch content on your computer that is in the same home network as your HD DVR. If you setup a remote desktop connection then you can watch your recorded content on the road... Not a DTV supported method, but some of our guys do it all the time.
I have had both Dish and DirecTV... while Dish was $5 cheaper a month, the hassles that went along with it were NOT worth the savings. Just my two cents, FWIW... -- Words of advice for today... "Be Happy, Drink Coffee, Drive Safe!" |

| reply to gdm I switched my TV from U-verse to Direct just about a month ago. Only having four streams to watch with U-verse(3 tv's) caused record conflicts and Tv watching on some nights. The HR34 with 2 H25's work great. Still have U-verse for phone and Internet. The DirecTV2PC won't work with HR34 at this time(Bug in software on the HR34 per Direct TV). |

| reply to gdm Service is very good. It rarely goes out. Today was the worst I have seen. Very heavy rainfall from a geographically large storm system. Signal was out for about 5 minutes and was intermittent for 5 minutes beforehand. Previously I had seen only about a minute per month of loss of signal. Get the $5.99 Protection Plan. I know a family whose entire system was destroyed due to lightning and wind damage. Everything from antenna to receivers was replaced as needed with no charge for labor or equipment. It did take a week to get it done, but there were a lot of storm damaged satellite systems. The HDTV signal looks great on every HDTV I have seen, from the lowest cost Insignia, Element, and Visio HDTVs to the top line Panasonic and Pioneer plasmas. Enjoy. |

It's the same or less as Comcast residential without TV and has no formal cap. People report downloading terabytes without getting a notice from Comcast.
If you are going to pay the same, buy into the Comcast service without caps.

| reply to gdm Check with DirecTV directly rather than going through Best Buy... In my experience, it's a LOT less hassle, and in the field I have seen nothing but issues with the re-sellers... And to answer your question, the HR-34 is the HMC (capable of recording 5 things at once) and the HR-2X is the HD DVR... The H25 is only an HD receiver, SWiM only -- Words of advice for today... | Yeah I'm ordering directly tonight. Bestbuy had a $150 gift card but you had to spend $399.
With the HMC using a PC program I can watch recorded shows correct? Looks like mobile phones just control the DVR. I don't see a reason to get the 24 over the 34, correct? |

| If you have AAA you can get a $10 a month discount for 20 months. You can stack this with a referral (I believe). If you don't have a friend who has directv I can give you my account number so you and I can get an additional 10 off a month |

| One of the main reasons I switched back in May. Not enough HD streams and only 1 DVR (small HDD) with U-Verse plus crappy HDPQ. Alot of our favorite shows always fell around the same day and time so now I do not run into that problem of running out of HD streams. I pay a little more a month now (maybe like $10 more a month than U-Verse TV) even with my promotional offer but I have 2 HDDVR's and 2 HD receivers. With Uverse I had 1 HDDVR and 1 HD receiver plus I have HBO and also took the protection plan. I kept U-Verse phone and internet. My service has been great and my HDPQ looks so much better now. I plan on never dumping D*. I had them once before but when I got my first HDTV D* did not lease equipment so I went with Dish for a few years since they leased before trying U-Verse TV when it became available. IMHO I like D* the best with Dish a close second. |

gdmPremium,MVM join:2001-06-15 Mchenry, IL kudos:3 1 edit | On with them now seems certain TVs only work with the HMC which makes no sense. Doesn't state that on the website.
Not sure what that was about but got it order, install set for Wednesday. |
