DHCP pool size issue

Have been setup as 10.1.x.x/255.255.255.0 with a pool of 219 addresses. Site has run out of addresses to assign, so I need to setup a larger pool.

Changed LAN IP netmask to 255.255.0.0.

Tried to increase DHCP pool to 400, but the Z5 reports "DHCP Pool Size Error"

The only thing that seems to work is bumping the pool over to 10.2.x.x and setting it to 253, but that's not going to be enough.

What am I missing here?

The dhcp server may not be able to handle a pool with more than 253 ip's

Time to get a real DHCP server or even better go IPv6

This is a large-scale shared living space without any hardware on which to run a DHCP server. They have a switch stack, some WAPs, a router, and a cable modem.

It hasn't been a problem since install 5-6 years ago, but now everyone is hooking up their cell phones and other devices to the WiFi network. 75-100 people are using up 220 IPs.

If the wifi access point can be a router that should help

Nope. They are Cisco APs. We have to use Cisco for clients like this because the load the users put on them crushes everything else (ZyAIR and 3Com both would deadlock after a few days).

If that means the access points don't have a router mode ok...and if you can't add a dhcp server that has a larger pool than 253 hosts......what about making some devices use manually assigned tcp/ip settings

5-6 years ago you didnt have 75 people using 220 IPs.

that's like saying my car operated fine the day i drove it off of the lot, but it doesn't drive the same after i put 100k miles on it.

it would be nice if there was a way for the existing zyxel product to work for you, but that might not be the case. it doesn't seem unreasonable for new hardware to be needed in the workplace as the company network grows....right?

for the record, i have never worked with zyxel products, just browsing the forums since i am considering purchasing some of their hardware.

good luck with your situation.

also, i always thought the limitation of a DHCP pool always depended on the class IP address and subnet, but it makes sense that certain devices are limited right out of the box, probably due to hardware i would imagine.

you probably dont want a device managing 500+ IPs if it doesn't have the proper hardware to handle the workload.
