AT&T DSL Elite Speeds drop every night

Hi,

I'm hoping someone here has some insight to my dsl problem. I have the AT&T elite dsl 6MB package, I've had it for almost a year, I've never had any issues with the speed, It's always consistently hit between 5-6MBs down since I signed up. But about a month or so ago the speed has taken a terrible hit. Every single night the speed drops from 6MB to 1.5MB or less at about 5pm and stays there till midnight. I realize that's peak hours, but i can set my watch to when the speed comes back, every night by 12:05 the speed is back up to normal. I've even tried downloading a large file before midnight and used netmeter to watch my speed, I can see it go up like someone opening up a valve, from less than 150K/s up to 600K/s.

I've checked the wiring in the house when the speeds are like this, I've checked the speed from the test jack on the outside of the house. It's still the same speed from the test jack. I've looked for bad lighting that could be causing interference and i don't see any, and as far as i know there is no audible noise on my line, and there are no filters that are bad as I don't have filters on my line. (I don't have voice data only)

Here are the stats from my 2wire modem during the slow speed period:

DSL Line (Wire Pair): Line 1 (inner pair)
Protocol: G.DMT Annex A
Downstream Rate: 6016 kbps
Upstream Rate: 768 kbps
Channel: Fast
Current Noise Margin: 22.0 dB (Downstream) 16.0 dB (Upstream)
Current Attenuation: 28.5 dB (Downstream) 16.5 dB (Upstream)
Current Output Power: 18.6 dBm (Downstream) 5.8 dBm (Upstream)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

This is probably caused by a congested (exhausted) gateway router at AT&T. There is a test done with Wireshark that we do to prove that sort of problem. »SBC DSL FAQ »How to measure throughput speeds on individual packets?

If you run it during a slowdown, post a copy of your throughput results. Your DSL stats do not show a problem with the DSL layer.

If it's an exhausted router is there anything that can be done or am I better off biting the bullet and switching over to cable?

Well that doesn't look like the typical exhausted router graph.

Frankly it looks like there is a misconfiguration in your gateway (redback or BRAS) and that it is set to a lower speed profile only at nights. Which doesn't make sense. Remember that is only the way it looks and isn't necessarily what is happening.

You should post a trouble thread in AT&T Direct: »AT&T Direct and tell the techs there your symptoms.

I think (hope) your problem will be easier to fix than an exhausted router which can take some time to be switched out.

Good Luck.

Thanks so much for your help!

I've started a thread as you suggested in the AT&T Direct forum.
