Re: Codecs are stupid...

I assume you got the file from freemake.com

But no, I didn't have any issues. I actually installed it for experimenting about two weeks ago and used it for about a week without issue. I suggested it, only as it's a free "one click" solution. There are numerous tools available. Other one click solutions, and more specialized tools which vary depending on the file type.

And yes, as I pointed out previously, and as aurgathor mentioned again, the most common issues would be file specs. But depending on the file format, it could also be a tool issue (or a combination of both).

Look at videohelp.com for many other tools and guides.

Too bad we don't have a much smaller field of codecs instead of 30+, More like 3 would be better.

But 'tis the nature of capitalism, gotta milk it.

encode.bat.zip 3,296 bytes
said by ctceo:

You wouldn't happen to have a benji I could have then?

Attached is the batch file I wrote for my own use to help with encoding. It's still in development stage, but it seems to work just fine.

Usage:
encode [source_file] [dest_file] [bitrate] [# of passes (1,2,3)] [encoding_speed]

For example: "encode source.mpg target.mp4 1000 1 fast"

You can ask any question, but don't bother asking me to explain how it works. That's left as an exercise for the user.

Have you tried using their conversion software?

From their FAQ:

Why won't my videos play?

The videos may not be in the correct format or resolution. Make sure to run all videos through the video conversion software that came with your player to ensure proper playback.

Also, the supported file specs are in the user manual.

Basics:
Use AVI as the file container.

Encode video using the Xvid codec.

Resize video to 320 x 240 pixels or smaller.

Encode the audio using an MP3 codec.

Reduce the audio to 2 channels if the original was more, such as 5.1.

Yes, and it was horrible software. Those are the specs that I convert to and it still says invalid file type.

It usually is, but it generally works most of the time.

In any case, most any software will work as long as you meet the supported specs.
