[Line Problem] Phone only rings once

Have an odd problem. DSL is OK.

With incoming calls the phone will only ring once, my cordless with answering machine not at all. But I can use the cordless to dial out.

Hooking a phone into the test jack in the NID, same thing, one ring.

I do have a splitter in the NID, but I'm assuming the test jack bypasses it.

If the nid splitter is connected correctly the test jack is connected before the splitter

Does the phone used to call your number ring just once

DSL can be pretty robust at times. When my son was away at college, he called me on his cell phone and said the land line was out, but the DSL was still working. The cause was some wet cable (during a rain event) which caused a ring ground, which tripped the ringing after one ring.

Just one possible cause.

I used my cell for test, one ring and then it says "call failed".

If call forwarding is turned on it will only ring once.
If it's not a line problem then it could be an issue with the way the line is set up at the CO or something.

If you get the same tro at the NID, it could be a few things. A bad card at the RT or CO if your loop is so provisioned. A short not bad enough to knock you out of service, but bad enough to trip the ring when the ringing voltage is applied. A bad line card in the CO. And I'm assuming you used a different phone when you checked at the NID, otherwise, it may be a problem with that phone as well. Let us know what they find.

Same type of phone, just a different one.

My stuff is quite basic. just two phones and a Keptel splitter in the NID.

I'm gonna try disconnecting one run at a time.

Should I be able to get some sort of volt reading with my meter? I can't in any range.

Just wanted to make sure it is nothing internal on my end before I call.

A few years ago I had a major problems for almost year. Three visits by techs said all was fine (static before rain).

It was finally fixed after a post in Direct. The guy who came out found and fixed (an open?) in about 10 min. But it seems that just a POTS issue is not Direct worthy.

Thanks for all the replies.

There is no need to check anything inside if when you plug a KNOWN working phone in at the NID and can re create the ring trip.
AAMOF, just unplug the NID and call your number from a cell/different landline...if the ring trips still, not your problem.
