One of the most searched for phrases on the company intranet site is "google."

I recall that one year when Yahoo was still king, the word searched the most was Google.

I know a lot of people that will type in URLs in the Google search box instead of putting it into the address bar of their browser.

One of the oddest things I see people do is pull up their homepage (often MSN because they haven't a clue how to change it or even that they can change it), do an MSN search for Google, wait for Google to load and then do a search for something they have in their favorites or which they know the direct URL to; local newspapers and other media sources, entertainment, etc.

Aye, very common. I tell people "Look where it says »www.whatever.com" and have them type whatever address I want them to go to there. Typically works well with the uninformed.

Ctrl-O (IE) and Ctrl-L (firefox) work well too if they are simply not getting it. Hell you can pull up websites from the run box if needed too. Start->Run or Windows Key & R. A surprising number of people know about the Windows key or are easily guided to find it or the "Run" option in the start menu.

Another trick is to have them hit Ctrl-D in the browser. That will automatically focus on the URL box versus a search engine box. It also automatically highlights the entire existing url so Ctrl-D + backspace + type in www.whatever.com and hit enter will typically work. Otherwise they will type over or append to the existing URL.

»/www.msn.comwww.whatever.com doesn't work well.

Arrg you know how many times I've had to remove that FGD toolbar because people think it adds something or they're just to dumb to avoid it

in IE8 I'd set the built in search bar to google and yet still they'd add the google toolbar

in the reason why box that pops up on uninstall I've started insulting it

I know a lot of people that do that, it is actually very smart, it would keep phishing and misspelled site redirection to a minimum.

I had to remove atleast 10 from a family members computer one time. They called saying their browser window was half the size it used to be when they got the computer. When I got there they had every toolbar known to man on that thing and it took up the top half of the screen. I just ended up doing a full harddrive wipe since I knew they had to be loaded down with spyware and other junk.

Same type of thing happened with my mom. She called me over because it took 10 minutes for her computer to boot up. I get there and checked it out. She had several IM programs (most I hadn't even heard of) all trying to boot on startup and so many toolbars her browser window was half the size it used to be. Multiple popups everywhere when she finally did get on. I wiped the hard drive and hit her in the nose with a rolled up newspaper with a firm 'no'.

This was several years ago. I was over there a couple weekends ago and her computer (not the same one) is clean, I was impressed. They can be taught!
