| Q: Why do people on C-List sell cars without titles?? (From NJ, duh) But...........how hard is it to get a car title? This would hurt trying to sell a car...or something with the mileage is off.....now is it also true you can get a salvage title then "re-build" the car BACK TO a clean title? Thanks for replies ahead...lol |

For no good reason whatsoever, I would say. Still held by a bank, stolen, borrowed, whatever. If anyone buys a car without a title they deserve whatever they get... (or don't get) |

 | reply to NJxxxJon My neighbor is from Dominican Republic and he buys these cars for $500 or $700 and ships about 3 of them to his country and sells them for $3,000 to $4,000 each.
He spends a total of $4,000 to buy/ship them and makes $12,000, that's a $8,000 profit, he does this once a month and lives the easy life. A lawyer and his "insider" at the dominican ministry print out new clean titles for the cars.
Sooooo these cars being sold with no titles are not for you Americans, it's for immigrants/foreigners. |

| reply to Xstar_Lumini Its clear what your describing is a criminal laundering of motor vehicles
In the US it is illegal to export a car without a title, I'll bet the same is true in Canada.
While your neighbor might be sending vehicles to the DR without them, one day when he gets caught/audited, he will likely be facing jail time. |

Also you know, people COULD lose the title as well... |

| reply to NJxxxJon I don't know why anyone would sell one sans title, because it is illegal in most cases. It is also a highly questionable practice to buy a vehicle with no title, unless the buyer is prepared to perform all the necessary paperwork to get the vehicle legal again.
As one who has sold and purchased many vehicles the legal way, I can tell you that if the proper process is not followed it can get to be very sticky. If you would like me to elaborate, let me know. -- "from a broken heart to a hole in the sky" |

 | reply to NJxxxJon By no title, do you mean: a) The seller claims to to own the vehicle free and clear, has lost the certificate of title and says the CoT can be replaced b) The title is clouded by competing claims or other circumstances and DMV will issue a CoT
If it's (b), the only legal reason to sell is as a parts, donor or scrap car
If it's (a), it's done all the time and a quick trip to DMV or a computer check of DMV records (if you have access) will verify who the registered and legal owners are.
As a used car/wholesale manager at car dealerships over the last 30 years, I've bought over 10,000 cars and I'd be surprised if the CoT was physically available in even 25% of those transactions. I've been burnt twice and both of those times the sellers presented CoTs. The mere presence of a CoT doesn't guarantee anything. If you lose a CoT, DMV will gladly issue a new one and it's not uncommon for some owners to have applied (and received) 2 or 3 CoTs for the same vehicle. While only the last one is legal, there is no way to really tell which is which.
Most of the transactions I (and most professional car buyers), are completed with no CoT, but one of these (PDF):

rody_44Premium join:2004-02-20 Quakertown, PA | reply to NJxxxJon I sold three in the last year on CL without title. None involved me owing money on the car. The first was a 1998 cavalier i bought years ago and never transferred the title from previous owner. It sat and i left my son remove and use the motor. The second was my ranger that i lost the title and didnt feel like getting a replacement title. The third was a eclipse. Turns out when i junked my sons eclipse i accidentally gave my wifes title instead of my sons title> (both were in wifes name and same year) That mistake means a title cant be obtained for the car. |

While your neighbor might be sending vehicles to the DR without them, one day when he gets caught/audited, he will likely be facing jail time. Oh yeah? So why are hundreds, if not thousands of stolen cars are being shipped to other countries from the U.S. and Canada? Mainly luxury cars. Figure that one out. |

Don't you think that the people on Craiglist would have been busted for selling stolen cars if that was the case? It's not illegal to buy cars without a title as long as there is no lien and they're not stolen.
If I go to the cops they will laugh their arses off at me for being absurd like TA63 and for wasting their time |

Buying a car without a title just means you handed someone money for a promise that they are giving you a title, not actual title to the car.
yes, car dealers can get replacements titles electronically when you trade in a car, they can also instantly verify with the DMV who the list owner is and any recorded liens. |
