Re: Q: Why do people on C-List sell cars without titles??

rofl, just like all the hookers right? the cops got CL to remove that whole section or something as they were just sitting around trying to set them up...

okay why not just do the same thing yourself then mr it is legal.

By no title, do you mean:
a) The seller claims to to own the vehicle free and clear, has lost the certificate of title and says the CoT can be replaced
b) The title is clouded by competing claims or other circumstances and DMV will issue a CoT

If it's (b), the only legal reason to sell is as a parts, donor or scrap car

If it's (a), it's done all the time and a quick trip to DMV or a computer check of DMV records (if you have access) will verify who the registered and legal owners are.

As a used car/wholesale manager at car dealerships over the last 30 years, I've bought over 10,000 cars and I'd be surprised if the CoT was physically available in even 25% of those transactions. I've been burnt twice and both of those times the sellers presented CoTs. The mere presence of a CoT doesn't guarantee anything. If you lose a CoT, DMV will gladly issue a new one and it's not uncommon for some owners to have applied (and received) 2 or 3 CoTs for the same vehicle. While only the last one is legal, there is no way to really tell which is which.

Most of the transactions I (and most professional car buyers), are completed with no CoT, but one of these (PDF):

»dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg227.pdf

Only problem is I am over in NJ. I wouldnt mind finding a beater shoulder 100 bucks cheaper because the person didnt find the title.....But it would still be extra out of the way if I asked them do drive to the DMV to claim they lost the title. Awesome reply btw!

Why do people on C-List sell cars without titles??

1) They can't show the authorities that they have legal title to the vehicle.
2) They're too lazy to get a replacement or duplicate title.

Either way, anyone who purchases a vehicle without clear title deserves whatever they get.
