| In the market for a new router (again) So my ZyXEL P-330w, after having some wireless issues over the years (Wireless stalls during huge file transfers; boots other computers offline), now seems to slow down every couple of days from mysterious increases in latency, even when hardwired. This router is almost 7 years old.. I think.
The end result was a very sluggish connection and lots of breaking up or silence through my Vonage box. It needs to be replaced soon.
I bought a D-link DIR-601 to replace it about a year ago, and it was also full of trouble. Pitiful wireless range and randomly dropping my AIM connection whenever it wanted. It's currently in its place until I lose my temper and alternate routers again.. or finally buy one that just works. Many other users reported this problem and it was never fixed in the new firmware.. and DD-WRT is unstable.
I need a router that can handle...
- 4 computers (2 wireless @ 802.11g; 1 802.11n) - 1 notebook (802.11n) - 1 PS3 (802.11g I believe) - 1 Wii (802.11g) - 2-line Vonage VoIP - In the future, I could be adding a Roku box to this mix.
I occasionally also do big file transfers on the LAN or WLAN.
This router will be placed on the left side of the house, on my desk. This is a single story, 1100 sq.ft-ish home.
My budget is $50-$70 Max. I really need something reliable here. I don't even want to spend more than $50 on a router but I will if I have to.
Any suggestions are appreciated. -- CableOne 10m/1m |

| reply to Pashune More problems are showing up. Any time I power up my PS3, one of my wireless clients drops offline for a few seconds.
Last night I was attempting to stream some 1080p MP4 media in the living room on the PS3, the living room PC was almost completely unusable as far as internet usage goes. Images were slow to load and videos simply didn't load at all... and of course, the media streaming on the PS3 lagged into oblivion, stuttering and freezing every few seconds. Very frustrating. It even happened with 480p content.
As my network stands currently, I replaced the DIR-601 with an old DI-604 router that seems fairly solid, but I'm using an old WRT54g router bridged for wireless use. Channel 11 & WPA2-AES. It's sitting in a rather elevated area so everything gets a strong signal, but it's a laggy and glitchy experience regardless. I've tinkered with the settings over and over to no avail; same with the PS3. Nothing seems to fix this.
Ethernet is not an option. I need wireless. -- CableOne 10m/1m |

U will need to spend $50 more than U had hoped to spend and pay attention to the caveats. |

I've looked at Buffalo's routers over the years, though I've yet to actually own or use one. I hear lots of great and neat things about them. I know it uses DD-WRT, but they're running their own branded firmware and recent reviews claimed the latest firmware update has fixed all of the issues they were previously experiencing. -- CableOne 10m/1m |

They have excellent charts to get a rough approximation of relative performance of routers, be it throughput or wifi performance of diff bands at various distances from source.
Then you can decide pound for pound, dollar for dollar what works for you. |
