Hold it. The marketing guy did not know all of those products in his house were not made in US?

I haven't been in a store in a decade, so I don't know if they have changed...

Talk about useless advice if that's the case. What hasn't changed over 10 years?

I was just questioning your comment Grail because I owned a Radio Shack from October of 1977 until December of 1986 and it was always Radio Shack.

I recall the local store had top notch staff trained in electronics right up until '79 here. After that it was hit or miss.

Granted I have found some good deals over the years as Radio Shack dropped certain brands for example re-branded Sangean shortwave radios to rebranded Grundig models and again when products made in Japan and the US were dropped for cheaply made electronics from China. Radio Shack here sold all those good old high quality scanners and shortwave radios for pennies on the dollar in the late 80s through mid- 90s.

2004 : All Radio Shack in Canada were bought by Circuit City in 2004 and renamed "The Source by Circuit City".

2007 : they were bought by Bell Canada and renamed again to "The Source".

Today : Now they only sell overpriced crap for cell-phone. I wanted to buy something simple like a laptop lock.... nope, they don't sell that. But they do have over 9000 styles of iPhone cases.

Radio Shack stopped being Radio Shack about 1979.

I'm guessing that was roughly when all the tube testing kiosks went away, too.

Nowadays, Radio Shlock is pretty much Best Buy, but with different décor. How the mighty have fallen.

Once in a great while I will pay a visit to Radio Shack if I am looking for some obscure part for older electronics just to give the local store some money. If they can not get it I will move to the WWW and find it.

Right after christmas, I went into radioshak and saw they had 3m strips I could not find anywhere else.
I waited 20 minutes to get checked out. It was a joke.

One guy was playing with a customers phone the entire time and would not pause to check me out.
The other worker kept chit chatting trying to upsell the 3 people in front of me and explained to each about filling out some survey.
It was a little over 20 minutes total to get checked out.

Never will I ever go to Radio Shack again for anything. They have no sense of customer service.

Locally, the Radio Shack does have laptop locks and a limited assortment of resistors, breadboards etc.. but has basically turned in a mini cell phone shop. They also have a very limited selection of tvs and overpriced a/v cables*, recievers and other items.

*I remember reading somewhere that most of the cables were only at most $2-5 max - that Radio Shack paid.. for their private label- only to sell it at $30-$50 [for their more expensive- private label.]

The last thing I bought from there was a blue-tooth adapter for a cell phone. [Tried to sell the extended warranty- claimed it would cover if I broke it... very unlikely- as I didn't trust what they said- ususally those warranties don't cover accidental damage.]

It will be a while before I go back to that location...

Brick & mortar stores are great for things you need "NOW".
Sure you can order a cable for Monoprice, but if you need one TONIGHT are you going to buy it from an online store? Or if you need a voltage regulator are you going to buy it from Mouser for $0.25 and pay $5 shipping to have it in few days or buy it from RS for $3 and have it NOW? Same for a small switch, connector, cable, fuse...
There is a price premium for B&M stores but in many instances it is well worth it over the shipping costs and delays.

Agreed.. If I need something in a hurry like something electrical or whatever they might carry in those nifty tool chests during work on a car or something, it might be worth it to shell out the dough. But for the most part, I have NOO idea how they're still in business. I know that some if not most of the elderly are still tied to RadioShack's crappy products, but even the elderly have someone around to warn them away from NutShack. Always had a soft spot for theyre cb radios since I was a kid though
