ARISS modem has wrong IP address - 174.44.9.202

Hi,

Yesterday I came home and the phone had a busy signal so I power-cycled the cable modem and all was well. This morning I try a speedtest.net and I see myself on the graphic out around Idaho! I check he IP address and it's not the usual 68.193.77.xxx address but 174.44.9.202.

I try Optimum's speedcheck and I get this:

Optimum Online SpeedCheck

Sorry, you must be connected to the Internet via your Optimum Online modem to use this application.

Tried calling tech support but got noise on hold so I sent an email.

Recently, a message was left regarding upgrades in the area. Wondering if this has anything to do with this.

Tnx,

Mike

It's a new IP range from OOL. Based on what you said about the maintenence, when they moved your node your IP changed, and you got this new one. ARIN's geo-location data will be updated soon, and the website will likely have that added in the near future as one of the "permitted" IPs. For speed tests, you can just use www.speedtest.net if needed.

My last few speedtests seem to be a few mb/s slower than in the past. I'm currently seeing 12-13 mb/s range and the last test with the old address was 17.91 mb/s. After the modem upgrade a year ago the tests were in the 14-15mb/s range. I hope the upgrade didn't hurt my speed.

One test this morning was only 8.39 Mb/sec. I would think tests would be fastest so early in the morning.

I moved the laptop so I was one floor above the router and it tested at 16.31 Mb/s so things seem good.

That is an Optimum / Bresnan IP address.

So how's the weather out there in Whitefish, Montana? Sounds like it will be a long commute back to NJ.

Speed tests are generally more accurate when you are hard wired to the router.

Something is definitely not right with that IP. I'm like 2 towns over from you and on the same system and I get a Piscataway IP address.

Oh, before anyone freaks out about me displaying my IP, it's an IP address, recorded by every single web server and Internet connected device you connect to, it's not like it is my ATM PIN or SSN.

Nothing is wrong with the IP, it's just a new range for OOL. You need to give time for the records to update. If CV's DHCP servers are configured to assign the IP, then how exactly can it be a wrong IP (and not just mismatching records or things not updated)?

Probably using some of Bresnan's IP range for their Optimum East network.

If IPs were moved from Optimum West to East, that means they were disabled on the DHCP server they resided on at West, the leases expired so they are not in use, then they were added to the East DHCP server in his area (amongst other things). IPs are moved all the time.

Please note, I'm focusing entirely on the part of the claim where this is somehow "wrong", and not just "something that happens all of the time on any network utilizing DHCP".

I knew there was upgrades going on from the automated message they left on my answering machine but didn't expect and totally new IP address. Everything is working fine.

When they did my area, I got a new IP address and a 10% decrease in my upload speed.

I'm thinking this is entirely possible. I would think that Optimum East has a lot more subscribers and the demand for IPs would be much greater here.

Who says they were 'moved' between West and East?

Maybe this is the first phase of full integration - a geo-diverse cluster of DHCP servers?

Goodness knows that if I were lucky enough to have two service regions with the requisite infrastructure in two different parts of the country, that's what I'd do!

OOL uses regional DNS and DHCP servers, even in the East coast area. There are very good reasons to have the DHCP and DNS servers located as close as possible to an area they are serving. In addition for routing purposes, it makes sense to have subnets containing an IP range serve a specific area. Of course we do not know if these ever were assigned or simply were an unused range. In any case moving subnets of IPs, to manage your network, would be standard network practice.
