Re: Google is Blocking Scroogle - says they are a Bot

said by Cabal:

I'm surprised anyone is still using Scroogle. For Google results without the tracking and personalization, there are search engines like DuckDuckGo, etc.

Thanks for turning me onto DuckDuckGo. I've been looking for a good alternative to Google. DuckDuckGo seems to be a great search engine without all the evilness.

Google could care less that it's Scroogle... this is an automated "anti-bot" system that just looks at the number of requests per IP.

Google's not singling out Scroogle by any means.....

They should care to some degree...And single out like create an exclusion for them.
How an anti-bot measure can be considered "just", by singling out these types of service, for time-out periods, is not for Googles leisure but careful fair assessment.
Regardless of their intent for these services the blind-eye methods are far from fair or competitive.

Why should Google make an exception for a site that uses something that breaks Google's TOS? If Scoogle gets the exception, who else does? What are the particulars needed to get an exception from Google's TOS?

Is it really fair or competitive that Google resources are getting used by Scroogle, but Google really doesn't get any of their normal benefits from it?

To be "fair" Google applies it's TOS uniformly to everyone and gives everyone the same rules and requirements if you want to do something that that may break the TOS.

They already do make the exception and have for years now.
I still think it is in their interest to do just so.
TOS's generally are an outrages over-kill on fairness to consumer and competition and hardly ever fully enforced.
If they were fully enforced more often we would see some well welcomed reform in this area.
Therefore Google does not apply it uniformly to every one but instead throws up an obstacle in the form of a anti-bot measure.

I switched to Startpage after Scroogle temporarily died for me..Search results seem accurate and thorough..to me there's no advantage to using Google anymore.

I still use Google for image searches as I haven't found a way to get Startpage to do that

altermatt, firefox's "start page" uses google search, so the search-results would be the same as when using google.. for images, when using FF's "start page", just do the search, using FF's 'start page", then, on the page with the search-results, switch it to "images"..

i don't like the changes that google has made to google-search, particularly with the black menu that drops down, now.. i found a way to avoid that, at least on google's homepage.. instead of using "www.google.com", use "www.google.com/webhp?complete=0" (or "www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en" if you prefer)..

i was surprised that i didn't see posts, in the forum, where people were complaining about google and the changes they have made to their webpages, particularly with the black menu that drops down, which i hate..

as far as "scroogle" goes, i was glad that someone mentioned it as i was looking for an alternative to using "google".. incidentally, i noticed that "google-search" won't pull up "scroogle".. scroogle would work for me until i would do a search for "scroogle", then i would see a message saying, in effect, that it wasn't working..google had started blocking it..

p.s. i see now that "start page" was not a reference for firefox's own "start page".. i had assumed that that is what altermatt was referring to, by "start page"..

No, StartPage results are nothing like Scroogle which scrapes Google. Besides, StartPage uses Go Daddy certs (about 5 of them) and GoDaddy is a very questionable certificate authority ...almost on par with Comodo. Why would you trust your search information to a site that can't be bothered to install a certificate from a reputable authority? Also, StartPage only gives you ten results per page and wants cookies. Scroogle does not need cookies and gives 100 results per page.

Maybe the answer is Disconnect extension and then a Google account. I just installed Disconnect. It is missing an important feature though on Fx. I also installed it on Iron where it has the feature.

No, Startpage can provide 100 results per page and it doesn't need cookies to keep the settings. Go to this page and configure start page for that service as you wish. Then click on Generate URL button at the bottom of the page and copy the link into your bookmark.

BTW, there is no such search service as "Start Page". There is "Startpage" and that name is trademarked. You make confusion for some people, when you don't use the correct name...

So, make a bookmark for Startpage and use it to open start page of that service by clicking on it

Oh, Mele20 See Profile, here is one more thing. which means a lot personally to you. If you by some reason don't like their certificate, in configuration page, mentioned above, there is Secure Socket Layer option. Make it Disabled, if you wish and use HTTP instead or HTTPS.

or also try the GoogleSharing addon for Firefox, »GoogleSharing.net.

The Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-Out (TACO) addon for Firefox includes the ability to use GoogleSharing.net, but some people have privacy issues with Abine. As a result there is a fork of TACO called Beef Taco which you should check out before installing TACO.

Not my problem.

There are tons of search sites and scraper sites around, find one you like.

Re: Google is Blocking Scroogle - says they are a Bot

I just tried TACO and hated it. It completely screwed with my Fx cookie settings and cookies. I won't use Spyware Blaster's Fx cookie protection for the same reason. I have custom settings for cookies and I only have about 6 on my computer.

I did like the ad tracking and social networking blocking. But I think Ghostery is far superior to TACO. I had to disable Ghostery to see TACO in action because Ghostery blocked everything at each site before TACO had a chance. I thought that was interesting that TACO let Ghostery take over. Ghostery has a cookie blocking that I had never enabled fearing that it would screw with my Fx cookie settings like TACO and Spyware Blaster and others do. But I finally decided to try it a few days ago and it doesn't mess with my Fx cookie settings at all.

Beeftaco would be even worse and completely useless to me. I never fail to understand why folks have to get third party crap all the time when they could just handle things themselves...why are they so lazy? All they need do is set up cookies properly (which almost no one does) in Fx. It doesn't make for a hassle and the USER has full control ...not some third party program that they have no idea whether is trustworthy or not or may be buggy, etc.

Startpage no workee here either,
DuckDuckGo has terrible results
and Scroogle has become a constant frustration and totally unusable.

Is anyone out there trying to fix Scroogle or has everyone just given up on it?

There must be a better way!

Probably the only way to help Scroogle is (1) donate what you can to them....maybe they could get more servers and, thus, spread the load around so it wouldn't look to Google like a bot accessing their servers and (2) complain publicly to Google.

Google is temporarily blocking this Scroogle server.

Please wait ten minutes before trying again.

Yes, Scroogle is upset with Google.
