2 edits | [Equipment] TiVo Premier: Very Loud Fan Whirring Astoria, NY I've had the Tivo since it was first introduced by RCN. No problems at all so far. Actually, I've had the green circle a little more frequently lately, and I wonder if that's related to this...
Anyway, I woke up this morning and my Tivo was making a very loud, constant whirring sound. The box is operating perfectly, so it must be the fan, not the harddrive (it sounds like the fan). The box is not hot or even warm to the touch, so I don't think it's overheating. I think the fan is just out of whack.
I unplugged for a couple minutes and plugged it back in. The fan started up again immediately.
I called RCN and scheduled a tech visit. Frustrating, though, since I won't really be able to watch TV all weekend (box is just too loud) and will likely lose all my saved programs. (That's best case, assuming the tech shows up as scheduled.)
Anyone else experience this? Anything I could try before the tech comes? I am leaving the box unplugged for an hour or so to see if that fixes...
Thanks!

Our fan seems to run at highest speed and can be heard only when the system is rebooted.
I suppose the fan or the whole unit could also be replaced if the simple fixes don't work.
Good luck! |

Re: [Equipment] TiVo Premier: Very Loud Fan Whirring Astoria, NY Alright! I blew compressed air and it seems to have fixed the problem! Phew. Hopefully this stays quiet and I can cancel the appointment.
Thanks guys!! |

It may not be a permanent fix (that would take a better designed fan from TIVO) but good to hear you got it quiet again. |

I had tech support come out to switch out a box that was making a very loud fan noise and waking my parents up at around 4 AM daily. The technician said that they had been starting to get an increasing volume of complaints regarding this problem and had just had a morning meeting about the problem. The fan on the unit in my room also makes noise although, thankfully, it does this not often and not for a long time. |

The noise has not repeated since the compressed air/shot of cleaner lubricant directed at the fan bearing.

 | reply to afarber Yup... blast of air is the solution. Our Elite was worse than the Premier that it replaced. |
