Stop Closing Relevant "Old" Threads

Please stop closing relevant "old" threads. Topics and issues that existed 6 months and often 6 years ago are still relevant today.

Encourage people to search for topics and contribute to the ongoing discussion or clarification of issues that have already been started, rather then starting new threads for the same thing over and over.

Stop playing lip service encouraging people to use search, and then locking threads so that when they find what they were looking for and wish to continue or contribute to the discussion, they find themselves locked out. That's very frustrating and annoying for the diligent and responsible user.

Re: Stop Closing Relevant "Old" Threads

You can always start a new topic with a reference link to the old. Locking old topics serves to promote new and fresh information, and brings the subject matter to the forefront in forum listings. Please keep in mind, old topics are locked because they are comparatively "inactive", not just because they're old. In tech forums, six months ago can be a lifetime as far as the technology is concerned. yes, I realize that there may be pertinent information that could lend something to the discussion, but more often than not, that is not the case. It really takes no more effort to start a new thread than it does to reply to old discussions. I don't understand your reluctance to do that.

You also have the option of requesting that the thread be re-opened by the mod in that forum. That sometimes works very well. I have seen many topics with the comment "Part II" in the title... or "Redux", or "reprise". It's an effective tool to relate the new to the old. it's a simple premise that new topics garner more attention than topics that were initiated months (or years) ago. And more attention, generally, promotes more discussion.
