Rogers Usage Tool Incorrect?

When I logged into Rogers to check my usage it said I used 42gigs in just 6 days!! According to Bit Meter I used less than 20. My reset date was the 15th. I know for a fact I didn't use that much, as I'm very careful about how much i d/l and u/l.

I don't have wireless and don't use a router, I use only one computer and the modem goes directly into it. Avast and Malwarebytes both came up clean and I use a firewall. I did use utorrent for 2 days but they were small files and it doesn't account for the other 3 days that were way out of whack. I called tech support but they weren't much help, the usual "run anti-virus and check for spyware etc".

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Is your counter for download AND upload? Rogers counts all data moved back and forth.

Lamb

@rogers.com

Yes, it measures both download and upload. Strangely, it's just the download that Rogers is measuring incorrectly.

Same happened to me ... 20gb on the 19th and and 26gb on the 20th... weird because i did not download more than 10-15gb in these 2 days.

I noticed that for the 17th the meter says I used about 600mb but I know i downloaded 2.4gb worth of video content and an additional 1.2gb Demo from the Xbox Live Marketplace.

I think it is inaccurate.

It happens from time to time - at least 3 times this month... e.g. I was spending all day Friday programming and did not have time to watch much YouTube, yet the usage tool shows over 2GB of usage!

I've noticed some weird numbers too - started about two weeks ago. Nothing like 42Gb in 6 days, but a couple of days when I know I used less than 1Gb show up as 5+Gb. At the same time, there are some days where I'm pretty sure I used more than is reported. I've been monitoring my usage daily since last May (when I started using Netflix and streaming TV episodes from TV networks' sites), and this is the first time I run into something really suspicious.

If Rogers want to limit usage and charge for exceeding it, they should get an accurate usage counter. I'm monitoring this closely for the next week or two and if things keep looking fishy I'll have to call them (where I'm sure they have a list of things to say that it's all my fault).

The usage meter has been totally out of whack this month. I can only rely on my own tool, and hope that the Rogers usage meter stay below my personal monitored bandwidth usage. With the low cap, I really do not have much room to be screwed around by Rogers.

This has been discussed in the Cogeco forum too.

Send me your IP address, I'll load you up and put you over every month, and there's not a damn thing you could do about it except pay. It's trivial to do.

All UBB meters are inaccurate, many off by miles. Who's in charge of the meters? The companies using them. The same companies that have been ripping off consumers for ages.

Until Industry Canada (Measurement Canada, to be precise) gets off it's ass and starts enforcing the Weights & Measures Act, folks should expect to be ripped off accordingly.

Short answer: Get used to it, and buy some lube if it hurts too much.

Yeah pretty much.

I would be getting the hell off Rogers, that's for sure. I've seen too many billing irregularities to trust them with UBB. Switch to a 3rd party provider with some decent caps and a little more integrity.

Sorry, as I've argued before, Weights and Measures isn't responsible here unless the Department of Industry changes the Weights and Measures act. The act covers goods that you can't "count" ... for example, it applies when a package like butter says it has 454 gm in a pack of butter. BUT it doesn't apply if a box of butter is supposed to contain say 24 packs of 454 gm, but your box only has 23.

We can't count 454 gm in a pack of butter because we don't know how big a gm of butter is ... we can't "eyeball" it.

But we can count packs of butter.

We have a civil contract case against the supplier if they don't deliver what they've charged you for. So, if they try to charge you for an excess 20GB that they didn't transfer then you have to make a case before a judge.

The problem we have is that there's no way of actually defining what we're paying for because of overheads and retransmits. For those reasons, a thinking judge would realize that there since the customer has no way to verify the overage charge they'd probably throw it out. The problem is, by the flip side, if we've actually used the service we don't have an accurate way to assert that we didn't transfer that excess 20 GB, because in the same way our metering would be called into question. That said again, the thinking judge would side with us because of the lack of clarity in what we're actually being billed for.

This really has to go to the Department of Industry and CRTC to clarify exactly what can and cannot be billed to the customer and we need a way as customers to verify the bits travelling in and out of our premises.

I just logged in to my Rogers account. Looks like they disabled the Memory Usage counter until they fix the issues:

That's the posture Measurement Canada is taking. Unfortunately, there's very little interest from anybody to pursue it, and folks can bet the incumbents will fight whatever arises, if anything, tooth and nail.

Until that happens, 3rd party ISPs with decent or no caps and a little more integrity fits the bill.

Look at the weights and measures act and the spirit of that act to see why MC takes that stance.

You're quite right ... there is very little interest, since comparatively few people actually go over their caps, and moreover, comparatively few care even if they do. Then you get the people who trust their ISP off that count, and hey presto, you're left with too small a constituency to make a meaningful complaint.

After a couple of weeks of occasional weirdness, for the past 5-6 days my usage is what I expect it to be. Not 100% sure that it means the problem has been fixed though.

Oh don't worry, you are still being charged, and if you go over, they'll nail you to the wall.

They did that on my cell phone, I had 10 minutes (according their app) but in reality I was already over.

I called and screamed and had them reverse it. I have no problems paying for overages that are my fault.

No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake.......
