| Is there such a thing as markers in media files Please excuse the topic heading, but I couldn't decide how to phrase it.
As long as I've been dealing with media files be it mp3, mp4, wmv, mkv ... etc etc etc. I always thought that there should be a way to jump to or go back to a certain part of the file without having to feel your way around the scrub slider to find a certain location. This would be very useful for long video files or a single large audio file. I know that you can always split the files up in multiple sections but if someone wanted to keep the entire file intact is there a way to "mark" certain areas of the file or track so they can be easily navigated? I wish that this can be achieved in the metadata so that it can be changed if needed. In essence it should navigate just like chapters on a DVD or tracks on a CD. If there is a way to accomplish this I'd like to know. Anyone who has experience in this area could chime in an let me know if what I asking is feasible or not.
I've even notice on youtube that little yellow markers are placed in the timeline of the video where ads interrupts the video ... but thats probably done through a server. -- Good judgement comes with experience...Experience comes after bad judgements |

 | I also would love to see this in media files but at this time most formats and players do not support it.
I think Divx player and file format has those features and can support menus and chapters. Also i think the .mkv container can support it but not many players support it. Evne when your are playing back on a PC and you have a choice of what player you use not many players support that feature.
I am ticked at Samsung because they had supported chapter marks in there C series TV and now in the D series they no longer support them under DLNA unless the file is played local on a TV attached USB drive. |

1 edit | reply to natedj The very first CD player I had back in the mid 80's was a Sony unit. It had buttons on it for exactly what you are describing.
In addition to the standard track selection ">>|" buttons there were buttons labeled as "chapters", IIRC and used a single" > "to represent them.
At the time I could not figure out what they would ever be used for. Most any disc I had just had indvidual tracks just as a music album would have and you could skip forward or back using the track selection buttons.
One time I inquired about these chapter buttons when I was at the stereo shop. The salesperson said that although not widely used, on some Classical music discs where there are long passages of music that an indidual track could be further broken down in these chapters.
He showed me just such a disc. I do not recall what it was but it did have several tracks that had multiple chapters.
So perhpas in the case of classical music where a single passage of music can be very long and " >> " fast forwarding would be cumbersome, chapters come in handy.
EDIT: clarity, symbols I used to describe features are also HTML codes and inadverantly affected my post. |

KoolMoeAw ManPremium join:2001-02-14 Annapolis, MD | reply to natedj Sure, QT and Flash Video have supported these for a while... However, the only way I've used them is to set 'event' points to trigger other features, like advancing closed-captioning or calling other media... Not sure I ever used them for navigation though...maybe years back in a Quicktime project... When you mux a file, it's possible to set chapter information(description, timecode, etc.). MKVMerge GUI makes it easy to do so, though I haven't played with it. »www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoo···gui.html |
