 | [LA] Up and down speeds Within the last 2 weeks, speeds have been jumping all over the place. It can be fine for 4 days (15 dwn, 2.5 up), then drop to 6 or less. Especially on the weekends. Earlier this morning it was great, but 3 hours later, I can't get higher than 7 mbps. Ping goes from 16ms to 25ms. |
|
 | It seems like every saturday night, the speed drops to nothing. |

 | reply to JeffinKenner My signals have been changing frequently. Is there something going on in the North Kenner, LA area?

 | reply to JeffinKenner FWIW, my signals and speeds are fine but I'm near City Park. I checked one of my clients in Metairie and their signals are OK but their speed tests are pretty crappy. However, they have 80 PC's and god knows who is running what that may be eating bandwidth - haven't checked the router yet to see if the problem is internal. |

 | reply to JeffinKenner to the op ... you need a docsis 3 modem .... you only have 1 downstream channel you can use on that modem you have.
more downstream channels = more lanes on a highway = faster and more consistent speeds |

 | reply to JeffinKenner What is the best place to buy a new modem. SB6120 or higher is my preference. Sometimes Best Buy has them, other times they don't. Walmart doesn't haven them in their stores. |

Much more stable
And 8 downstreams Vs 4 for the 6120 |

 | reply to JeffinKenner Has anybody tried a Zoom DOCSIS 3 modem? People report that they overheat. Any opinions? I should wait and get a Cisco or Motorola instead. |

Well Zoom does have a newer model D3 modem which is the Zoom 5341J, and its a 8x4 modem, and the case looks different. I know a few users in the comcast forums use it, and I haven't heard them complain of any problems yet. I don't know if bestbuy is carrying the newer model or not though. I know a while back they carried the 4x4 one, but like I said the 8x4 one has a different case and all. |

 | reply to JeffinKenner I went to Best Buy and purchased a SB6121 for $109.99. I figured my older SB5101 will eventually get phased out so I might as well get something new now. |

Was there a reason you didn't buy one from the local cox store? Not saying the SB6121 is a bad choice, it provides better modem info customer side then the Cisco modem. But the Cisco DPC3010 is 8x4 compared to your 4x4 motorola, and you could of probably saved about $25-30. Since as far as I know cox sells there Cisco DPC3010 for $80. |

 | I don't have time to drive where it is located. |

 | I called and registered the modem tonight. My upload speeds some to be drastically improved from the SB5101. The SB6121 is pretty nice. |
|
 | Do you have two blue lights on your 6121 in that area too? |
|
 | Yes, and it synchs pretty fast.
