 | Just ordered 640k connection. hello all from newmarket, ontario!
i just ordered 640k dsl connection from teksavvy, and wanted to know peoples experiences with it. also, does anyone know how to ask bell to upgrade lines in my area? |
|
 | What are you hoping to use your connection for? 640 is pretty basic. Are you used to using the internet on faster connections? You may find things a bit sluggish. |

 | reply to joeyxl Hmmm... Just so you know, you won't be on 640K too long. The 640K plan is not in the new Feb. 1 pricing chart.
According to an earlier post in the pricing update thread, the 640Kplan is being discontinued, Feb. 1, and replaced by the 2M/???K, 25GB, $24.99 plan.
»DSL Basic
I hope you weren't counting on the 'unlimited' downloads part! And the 6-hour unmetered time does not apply to Basic.
Bell lines? If you want to get their attention, tell them your normal phone is full of static; don't mention DSL. But, of course, they might actually check your line and determine you were 'fibbing', and charge you a gazillion dollars fee! |
|
 | Umm...so the day my lines get active, i get no service? Anf 300 gb is ok |
|
 | Why wouldn't you get service? |

But hey, if they signed you up for it, then they'll probably put you on it. Grandfathered plans and whatnot? |
|
 | reply to joeyxl said by joeyxl :300 gb is ok Assuming you do get a 640K line 300GB will certainly be enough, because even if you max out your line 100% of the time, it'll still take you a little under 2 months to transfer 300GB.
640Kb/s / 100 * 80 = 512Kb/s after overhead (probably a few bits more than that actually, overhead isn't quite 20%) 512Kb/s / 8 (bits in a byte) = 64KB/s 64KB/s * 2,592,000 (seconds in 30 days) = 165,888,000 KB/mo 165,888,000KB/mo / 1024(kilobytes in a megabyte) / 1024(megabytes in a gigabyte) = 158GB of possible throughput per month (in proper base-2 gigabytes).
And if you get switched to the new bottom-tier plan, you won't get 300GB/mo either because it's absurdly limited to 25GB/mo. The old 640K plan was at least only limited by the advertised 640K linespeed, the cap on the new 2M plan is equivalent to over 20 times than 2Mbps.
25GB/mo * 1024 * 1024 = 26,214,400KB/mo 26,214,400KB/mo / 2,592,000 = 10.114KB/s 10.114KB/s * 8 = 80.9Kb/s 2000Kb/s / 80.9 = 24 times less throughput than the advertised bandwidth would imply.
In a just world/country the 640K/2M plans wouldn't even exist, and the 5/6M would cost what the 640K/2M plans do, if not less. Sadly, that country is most definitely not Canada. The lowest tier plans are a giant rip off. Unless you're lucky enough to have access to a new condo or somewhere with a non-incumbent FTTH setup, there isn't really a plan in this country that isn't, but the lowest tiers are the absolute worst, utterly slow speed that you can't even use for more than a few hours per month. |
|
 | wow, thanks for the info. I really wish i could get higher, but turns out bell skipped my, area for upgrades. You guys think this connection might be fine for PC gaming? |
|
 | The 2M plan might be useful for some games, but somehow I doubt it. Maybe some older games, idk. It probably varies a lot depending on the game and/or the type of game. I doubt 640K would be be remotely useful for gaming (again though, maybe there's some categories of game, or a few specific games where it would suffice). |
|
 | reply to joeyxl online gaming does not require much speed - latency and jitter are more important.
Online gaming can require as little is 80-200kbit upload/download (maybe a bit more if you're on an a server with many many users)
However, the game will definitely lag if someone else in the house is browsing the internet, on a connection as slow as 640k. |

| reply to joeyxl 640k... I've played battlefield on xbox live on it, run a voip ATA, listen to pandora and watch youtube (with crazy buffering).
What's really scary here is that TSI is soooo fucked up right now that they'd sell you a tier of service that won't exist in under 15 days AND not even warn you about the upcoming changes. |
|
 | if i have so service when i go to by my dsl modem, im going to be very upset. like i know this isint the fastest connection, but its the only one i can get in my area. even 2M would of been fine, but bell seems that bringing better DSL is not important |
|
 | so i just got off the phone with CS, and they say im paying for the basic, with 25GB cap. its only 24.95/mth. it will have to do, till i move, or bell gets up off their lazy a**, and put in newer lines in my area. the best part is the bell node is on my lawn 0_0 |
|
 | Glad you were able to pry some real info out of them, on the "up to 2M" plan.
They didn't happen to mention the upload speed you can expect on that 2M plan, did they? |

oh i wish, i live in newmarket, in a unfourtunaly 22 year old subdivision that only gets 640k. we used to have bell dsl in 2004, and my dad asked them to upgrade the lines or something so we can get a faster speed, they said "in 2 years".
its now 2012, and nothing has been done. hence why the cable lines are tied up, and im using dsl for myself. im not impressed, but what can you do? |
|
 | said by joeyxl:... in a unfourtunaly 22 year old subdivision that only gets 640k. 22 year old? Heck, that's practically brand new in Bhell years.
Lots of people don't get the full speed of their "up to ??? Speed" plans; such is life, and crappy phone lines. Newer modems are better than years ago; hopefully you will get better than 640k, on the 2M plan. Once you get up and running, ask TSI for your line stats to see if you're at max, or if anything can be 'adjusted'. |

lets hope so |

 | reply to joeyxl im in newmarket also and i get 5m down no problem....you should be able to get at least 5-6meg service. if i wanted i can get up to 25/7 service according to bell so they must have upgraded something in the area. -- it's your fault for choosing cable internet..... |
