Re: Just ordered 640k connection.

2min away from you at yonge/mulock...5m dsl no problem here...

640k dsl would be extremely slow for today's standards...most websites have more than just plain text on them and surfing around at that speed is pretty slow.

if they up the speed to 2meg down that would be slightly better but i wouldn't be able to live with that for very long.

what the F***.

so id like to do a little "report" of a conversation i had with a bell tech i was with yesterday...

my girlfrends grandfather was getting internet at his shop (located in newmarket as well) and was promised 5Meg from teksavvy. so the guy came in to put dry-loop. at the junction box, he was getting 650k, then he went to the box for the plaza. was getting 800k. went to the main node for the area, and was able to get 1.1mbps. not bad, but not as promised.

he tells me the CO for newmarket is at younge and millard.

so im wondering if i can get faster than 640k, because the service they use to find what speed you can get is false. guy is coming monday... *crossing fingers*

i can't imagine there is that much of a difference from one side of yonge to the other....and millard to savage road is like 2km away so distance should not be an issue.

but i do know its not just a simple switching wires around to get faster speeds....it needs to be activated on teksavvy or bell's system to get the full speeds on the lines...

yeah its very odd. also, id like to flip bell the bird, because their tech came to my house Saturday even though it was supposed to be Monday, and does the work without letting me know! i wanted to see what speed he got. so i call bell, and they flat out said "your not giving us money, we cant help you", and was also told i was not allowed to speak to a supervisor because im not a bell customer. we will just have to wait till Thursday to find out what im getting.

my subdivision, which is off Savage road in Newmarket, has just had the lines upgraded, in preparation for Fibe TV.. 25Mbit is available here now, where just 4 months ago, the best you could hope for was 640K, as you got.
Teksavvy Cable is available in Newmarket too, has been for a while now, and I have so far not had any speed issues here

I am 400 metres away from the CO, but the loop length is roughly 3km.

Your lines do not take the most efficient path back. That could explain your awful sync rates.

I live off savage as well. Why are they telling me 640k?

In (very) old neighborhoods, it may not even be a matter of "most efficient path" but simply a matter of that CO not existing back when the wiring layout was built and wiring not having been re-routed to the new CO yet... your line might not even be fed from that CO.

In my case it's a relatively new neighbourhood (2.5 to 3 decades) - I confirmed with a Telus tech that I'm connected to the CO. That's why I can't get higher speed internet yet. Only the remotes are ADSL2+; the CO is still on ADSL1.

Its 2012. 640k? Seriously? I mean really, seriously? My first dsl line was 768k and way back in 99. Come on, seriously?

did you check your phone number on the bell site?.. the upgrades are rather recent. They installed a new remote at Savage/Sandford Street.. I am in the northern end, on Goldsmith

Some people have it worse with neither DSL nor cable available at all... I bet those people would be really happy to have 640/512 for $35/month or so instead of satellite/Xplore wireless internet.

i have to get dry-loop, because my father removed the bell line from the junction box inside the house, and got vontage for phones. so the exsistng phone number that was here, no longer exists with bell.

on Thursday i will be reporting back what speed i get, as i do not trust bell portal. they promised 5M for one area, and can only get 1.1M. so maybe i will be able to get something higher. this is why i wanted to talk to the bell tech, to see what has been done to my street in respects to upgrades...

1 edit

Just FYI... Today I finally got a "definitive" answer from the TSI direct forum. The upload speed on the 2M/25GB/$24.99 DSL plan will be 800K ("up to").

So, that's a nice upload speed for such a low DSL plan; that will give decent speed on large uploads, or even sending emails with big attachments.

That speed certainly makes sense, as that is what is in the tariff and that is what Bell offers. (Although TSI phone support, including a supervisor, had earlier told me it would be 512K.)

edit1: added "up to"

There is nothing from a technical point of view, stopping you from having 2 cable modems in a household. Would work no different than if your neighbor installed one.. not sure if Teksavvy/Rogers will allow it though.. worth asking, I would think.

well i plan to move out, so its not a big deal (but i will be getting cable with them when i do move out).

ANYWAYS, i got the line hooked up, and i only get 800k max from speedtest.net . so i guess the other guy in here who lives 3 streets down is lucky. anyone know of anything else i can do to amp the speeds?

-Improve your internal phone wiring all you can, in case that is affecting your signal quality. Test your speed at your demarc point if you can, to see if your own wiring is slowing you down. But, it sounds like you're just in an old wiring area.
-Ask TSI to check your line stats, and see if it's possible to get a profile upgrade. Ask about going on interleave, vs fast path.

* Do you know if TSI will treat you as a former 640K customer, and you will get the 'gradfathered' upgrade to 2M (300GB cap that way and no Perpetual Activation Fee), or are they treating you as a new 2M customer (25GB cap, and $1.50/mo perpetual activation charge)?

I don't know if they go on order date, or activation date.

Out of curiosity, could you post your line stats here? It would be interesting to see what is the line capability and what profile they set you on.
