Re: Would a bad chipset cause these problems on a new laptop? I certainly will let you know how it goes. I appreciate your looking at the checkcodes. It's odd, because I ran memtest for about 14 hours and ran chkdsk also - I never saw the results of that since it rebooted, but when it was almost done I didn't see any errors listed.
I asked the tech to ask them to check out the laptop besides the harddrive, she said she would.
I appreciate your help.

matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | chkdsk will just fix file issues on the drive... you can have issues when windows does not shut down correctly that was more to just make sure the file system was in good order... Something like HD tune would tell you the physical condition of the disk.
Chkdsk =/= HD tune (SMART) heath tab.
Best of luck getting the thing back in working order! |

LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | I was wondering why chkdsk didn't show any problems! Now it's in Lenovo's hands...hopefully they will correct whatever the problem is.
Thanks for the good luck.

LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | reply to Libra I got the laptop back yesterday. Lenovo said: problem pc recovered from BSOD. They reinstalled the OS and updated to the latest Bios. It passed all tests.
I don't know what to make of this, so here goes.
I removed Mcafee and Office 2010 trial. I installed programs, connected to the internet and installed recommended Windows Updates, not optional ones.
In a standard account, I attempted to use "run as admin" to access SpywareBlaster. Explorer froze and this time I got my instructions and used task manager to end task it and restart explorer. I was able to leave the standard account and update SpywareBlaster from the Admin account. This happened on December 22 when I first set up the computer.
I noticed the following Errors under System for 2/16/12:
Source: Drive, ID 11 = The driver detected a controller error on Device\harddisk1\DR2 (two messages for this)
(I had a flash drive plugged into a usb port and have a usb mouse plugged in - could the above have anything to do with that?)
Service Control Manager. ID 7023 = Windows module installer terminated with error %%16405
SCM - ID 7000 = Ready Com Direct Router Service failed to start - system can't find specified file
SCM - ID 7034 = Intel Management and Security App user notification service terminated unexpectedly. Did this one time.
SCM - ID 7034 = Intel Rapid Storage terminated unexpectedly. Did this one time.
SCM - ID 7034 = Seaport Service terminated unexpectedly.
(It seems that these SCM errors relate to Server 2008, not Win7) I was looking at services in the task manager this morning and I saw Seaport running.)
There was also an error re Avast not getting a service because of a password. (my interpretation) Avast is running fine in processes and services.
I also saw two WLAN Warnings. I don't think the laptop is part of the lan - it's a wireless connection accessing an access point.
I'm really getting tired of all of this. Is there anything here that I should be concerned about?
Thank you.

matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | Okay I am gona say again can we get a hd tune screenshot (health tab) I just would like to see what SMART looks like as far as this "The driver detected a controller error on Device\harddisk1\DR2" message (I kinda think that would be the USB drive, I think your HDD should be disk0 but... hey I wanted a screenshot before the PC was sent in anyways =p )
Here's the thing alot of windows errors you need to not worry about... WLAN is wireless local area network if you are using wireless then yes... your are part of a WLAN with out knowing the exact error it could mean less than nothing...
A really good scam I heard of was someone calling and telling some clients of mine to go to event viewer and look... then "you see all those errors that's very bad!" okay well it scared them enough to DRIVE AROUND TOWN looking for my car to ask me what was going on (no cell phone ftw leave me aloneeeeee)
Now of course the guy said he could make them all go away for like $100 or something.
I told em here I like you, I'll charge ya $50 for the same service, and cleared the event viewer LOL... *scammmmm* lol
Not one error mattered lol... it was all dumb crap, could not get a new IP from the router... cause like I had it off... or the modem cause the internet went down for maintenance... etc etc.
So for hahas I would like to just see the HD tune health tab as you had issues before, just to be sure the HDD at least looks good in SMART... and then we need to see what disk is disk 1...
On windows 7 go to the start menu search for "compmgmt.msc" with no quotes Click on what you find...
Go into storage, diskman. Now you should see Disk 0 1 2 3 4 etc... See if you see "1" and if you do please tell us what it is.
If you do not see it, it was likely the USB drive, I bet you I have 1000000 of those errors cause I *never* press the remove device button lol. |

 | reply to Libra I wouldn't worry about what you describe in the post just above. Yes, the controller error was probably about the usb drive you had plugged in.
Are you still getting blue screens, system rebooting on its own or locking up or does the system seem stable? |
|
 LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | Hi asd,
Thanks for your thoughts on the controller error. With one exception, the computer is running fine so far - no bsod's or reboots on it's own. When I tried to use "run as admin" to update SpywareBlaster from a standard account explorer.exe wouldn't do anything - I didn't get any message, it just didn't respond...so I end tasked it and restarted it in Task Manager.
I appreciate your letting me know things sound okay.
Sincerely, Libra |

 Disk Management |
Hi matt5,
I didn't find a 1 in disk management. Since I was there (something new for me) I took a screenshot. I'm glad to know that some of these errors aren't important. Thanks for explaining a WLAN is wireless. I thought it referred to my lan wired computers.
Sincerely, Libra |
|
 | reply to Libra Then I would try to minimize any further modifications to the system or software for a while and see how things go, making sure it seems stable. |
|
matt5 join:2001-10-06 Lagrangeville, NY | reply to Libra Ya likely the USB stick generated that message, I would not worry about it, if you unplugged it too soon or did not use safely remove hardware... coulda have given you that error.
If you like you can download HD tune and post a picture of the "heath" tab... or just leave everything alone like asdf said and see what happens, if you have any more issue we can go back into worrying about stuff. |

LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | Thank you both. By modification - I was thinking about looking at the Optional Windows Updates. Should I keep away from that for now?
I have had difficulty inserting an usb tool into the computer, so maybe that caused it.
So far things are going well. Friday night when my daughter went on the computer there was an S with a slash through it where our internet connection shows up in the systray. It went away in a second or two,
I'm also seeing some DNS Client warnings for the Westell and other things like tcp? and msftn - saying it timed out after none of the configured dns servers responded. All I can say is I have OpenDNS configured in my Westell modem/NAT router and the computer recognizes that.
Sincerely, Libra |

I would for a while until you are confident that your previous problems are no longer there. |

LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | Thank you, I will. There is one security update available, I'll install that.

Need Advice I noticed a couple of days ago that when two accounts are logged on the computer, the first account logged in gets 25% CPU in the Lenovo Energy Management process and it won't stop until the first account is logged off the computer. (This usually happens with a browser open -but when I tested it today:
first account -no browser open second account - no browser..........CPU speed normal in both
second account - browser open......1st account 25% CPU second account - closed browser....1st account still 25% CPU
I found a thread at lenovo with a similar problem but different lenovo computers.
There is a Lenovo Energy Management update for my laptop - but the version is 6.0.1.2. The version currently on this laptop is 6.0.1.5. I have no idea of what version may have been on here before the OS and bios was reloaded.
Should I remove the software and install version 6.0.l.2 (maybe make a system restore first)?
This CPU usage is quite noticeable to me because when I first got the laptop I never heard the fan run and got help to run tests and see that it was working properly (which it was).
I appreciate your advice.
Sincerely, Libra |
|
 | Is the fan just ramping up until the sound is noticeable or is the machine getting very hot and the fan is really working hard? Is it making the machine feel like it is bogged down and unresponsive? |
|
LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | Well, actually, I'm noticing the fan sound and that caused me to look at the task manager and bring up all users. That's how I found the Lenovo Energy Management for the other standard user using 25% CPU.
I can feel hot air coming from the vent. I never touched the laptop to see if it felt hot. I haven't noticed it being bogged down or unresponsive, but I don't do much on the computer. (maybe I'll let this occur and have my daughter go on her account)
It's just odd that when I first got the laptop I was concerned because I never heard the fan run and now it's doing this. It didn't do this before because I would have noticed it with two accounts logged on.
Is this 25% CPU usage bad for the laptop? I don't like how it won't stop until I log off of the first user account.
Here's the thread where I noticed high CPU for Lenovo energy management (different model).

Re: Would a bad chipset cause these problems on a new laptop? okay, something screwy is going on here:
It doesn't matter which user logged on first. When two accounts are logged on, whichever user is actively on shows the other user's Lenovo Energy Management to be 25%.
I had two users logged in with both browsers open on facebook and youtube playing Adele on one. My daughter played a game on facebook. The CPU usage went up to 75%:
Energy Management for other user: 25% CPU Palemoon....................................4-5% CPU Plug-in Container (I think part of Palemoon) 41%
The fan was going, the laptop felt slightly warm near the on/off button (above the fan grill) and the computer was going slightly slower (not too much).
Besides the other user's energy management using the CPU. When I switch users the fan starts up, then subsides and the CPU goes down to 0 (even though 2 users are logged), then in no time the CPU goes up to 25% (Lenovo Energy Management).
I checked the settings of the Lenovo Energy Management and they are both the same.
Right now the CPU is running 25%. Is this normal? I know I never experienced it before.
Sincerely, Libra |
|
 | It isn't ideal and I don't think it should be using so much cpu but I don't think that I would worry about it. Will it hurt your machine? No, I don't think so. Based on that level of cpu usage and the fact that the system isn't irritatingly bogged down it doesn't sound like excessive heat is likely to be a problem.
If you downgrade your management software then there is the possibility that your previous problems will return, so you have to ask yourself whether you would prefer to possibly return to your previous issues(or have others crop up), rather than tolerate the higher cpu usage or use a workaround like logging the other user out. |
|
LibraPremium join:2003-08-06 USA kudos:1 | Thank you, asd. As long as it won't hurt the computer, I won't do anything. I guess that newer version of Lenovo Energy Management came with the new OS they loaded or the updated bios.
So far, no bsod's I'm happy to say. Although I had the laptop about 3 weeks before they started happening, so I have to wait for that period to pass to feel that it's better.
I appreciate your help.
