However, family and friends have be summoned to the hospital at his request; apparently he wants to say a final goodbye.

I believe he's alive but People Magazine is running with the CBS report of him dying

His son has confirmed he is alive.

If he is close to death my guess would be it has more to do with the fall he took last month....fall and fractures can be deadly for the elderly.....I believe he also had a hip replacement not to long ago....then he was injured while on the sidelines.

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who is battling lung cancer, is in "serious condition" according to his son, Scott. Scott tweeted around 9:20 p.m. ET Saturday night in response to reports that Paterno had passed away, "CBS report is wrong - Dad is alive but in serious condition. We continue to ask for your prayers and privacy during this time."

Matt Millen said he died of a broken heart.
Penn State was his life and when they threw him under the bus he lost his will to live.
What a shame.

He died of cancer.

Blaming Penn State for his death makes no more sense than saying "they killed Paterno but they let Sandusky live".
