 | CV workers attempting to unionize (CWA) said by NY Times : They describe themselves as beaten-up workhorses, these burly fellows with linebacker shoulders and bass-register voices.
Four men sit in a union hall on a darkened stretch of Utica Avenue in Brooklyn, talking about life as cable installers for Cablevision and efforts to bring in a union, in this case the Communication Workers of America. ... Cablevision Systems Corporation, run by James L. Dolan, has hired a premier anti-union law firm. The company began an internal Web site called Why Union Free? and required 285 Brooklyn employees to attend anti-union meetings. The union vote is Jan. 26.

| reply to aannoonn Our labor process at work. Union thugs and company thugs fighting it out, with the workers caught in the middle. It will be interesting to see how the vote turns out.
If wages at Verizon are 1/3 more, why not just go work there? -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

| reply to aannoonn Well, that is an interesting academic debate. Which is better - fewer jobs at a higher rate, or more jobs at a lower rate? Or, is it good to have some of each, and not a single-size fits all?
It will be interesting to see what the CV workers decide. I think it all comes down to whether they believe their opportunity for advancement, and wage increases (less union dues), would be better with the union than without.
One thing is for certain - it would be good for the CWA. One more mouth to feed with our monthly cable fees. -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

PhoenixDown-- Wants FIOSPremium join:2003-06-08 Fresh Meadows, NY kudos:1 | reply to aannoonn Just read the article which is a nice emotional piece but the only two facts I picked up is the pay differential already noted in this thread and a retirement plan (outside of the 401k they already receive) that no company in the world will agree to giving; those that have them are phasing them out.
Does CV use outside vendors like TWC does for certain work? |
|
 | All the CV installers are contractors. |

| Re: CV workers attempting to unionize (CWA) said by KeepCalling :Union dues is 1.9 %. Are you sure it is that high? If they unionize, they would have to take an immediate 1.9% pay cut? And it would be even a bigger cut to take-home, because it is 1.9% of gross taken out of net pay, right? -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. | Will this include Lightpath Tech's. I sure hope not. The service will be sure to go down if they do. |

 | reply to aannoonn Funny thing is the article doesn't mention how employees get the gold package all international channel disounts on ppv, vod free ool and off if they unionize they can kiss that good bye. In Verizon their employees get a discount like 10-20% off normal rates. Cablevison also pay a majority of the health benefits as well, if you make under 40k you don't have to pay a dime for benefits and after that its on a sliding scale based on how much you make. |
|
 | reply to bohratom I can't get that rate anyway because there are no competing services in my area. That rate is designed specifically to compete where there's competition (no monopoly), with little influence of Cablevision's internals such as worker pay. |
