[XPHome] print spooler

When trying to add a new printer I get the following error message print spooler services not running. I've started it manually and when I put the cd in to install I get print spooler services not running. But I turned it on Any help would be much appreciated as I don't know where to try next. I run XP home ed. and I'm trying to install canon pixma mx420

Are you sure the service started successfully? The default start should also be "Automatically".

You may have a corrupted print job that's preventing the spooler from starting. That's the most common reason for it not starting successfully.

Delete any files in the c:\windows\system32\spool\printers folder then try and start the spooler service.

The service default is set to "Automatically". When I went to the printer folder as craig and workablob suggested the folder was empty. Do you have any more ideas as to what is wrong.

Since your not able to start the spooler service i would check your event viewer and look for anything related to the spooler service when you start it.

Might want to try this:

»windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind···-windows

In step 2 there is a printer 'fix-it' which should reset all the spooler settings to their defaults.

I did what craig suggested it didn't work unfortunately I next tried what quaker suggested and this gets kinda long so bear with me. I went to event viewer and found the error and here is what it says

User Action
To determine why the specified service failed, do the following:

Display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error that SCM encountered. To display the error, at the command prompt, type
sc query service name
The information displayed can help you identify possible causes for the error.

What command prompt this might sound dumb but I don't know where to go to get to command prompt. When I enter in the service name which I assume is service control manger. There is a ID number which is 7031. If you need any more info about what the event viewer said let me know. Also I get event id I get the following. "These numbers match a text description in a message file. Product support can use the number to understand what occurred in the system" Where would you go to look up the numbers ?

Next option is doing a sfc /scannow from a command prompt ( make sure you have up-to-date windows xp cd handy, at least sp3 slipstreamed into it, or you will end up doing some updates after its finished if it replaced any files.)

then if all else fails repair install

Can you go to the following registry key?:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Spooler

Can you right-click on that registry key and select "Export" and save as a .reg file.

Then right-click the resulting .reg file and select "Edit".

Can you then copy and paste the contents of the .reg file to a post in this thread?

I tried out that registry key in in a Windows XP virtual machine and it worked without issue.

So the problem is elsewhere.

There should be no problem starting the Print Spooler service but it appears to be stopping for some reason.

When did this problem start and did the start of the problem coincide with installing any new software?

Also, the following link has some information on cleaning up printer drivers, you could run through some of the steps:

»members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPr···vers.htm

The problem could also be from a third party program that interacts with the Print Spooler service.

If problem persists try a "clean boot" and see if the problem resolves - follow Method 1, Steps 1 to 3, to clean boot:

»support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

What printer, if any, was previously installed and what printer are you now trying to install?

I think auggy is on the right track. Printers and their drivers can mess you up. I also suspect that you had a previous printer and need to uninstall all software. Previous and current, then start over. It's easy to click on task mgr. and see that spool service is running. If it is, then it's not a ms issue, it's a hardware issue.

I want to thank every one who gave me advice and where to look. Even though my problem didn't get fixed I learned new ways and where to start looking when something else comes up. A very good learning experience for me. I did find some one to take it to and I'll show him this thread and maybe save him some time.
