yes i just got a 3550 24 port for 60 bucks from a ccie that didn't need it anymore. it does say smi but the image allows emi. so does this mean i can run smi or emi? at separate times of course.

Taking a wild guess, but based on this command on my 3550 this originally SMI switch can act as an EMI with the correct image.

Switch(config)#router ?
  bgp       Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
  eigrp     Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)
  isis      ISO IS-IS
  iso-igrp  IGRP for OSI networks
  mobile    Mobile routes
  odr       On Demand stub Routes
  ospf      Open Shortest Path First (OSPF)
  rip       Routing Information Protocol (RIP)
