What does a Yellow Light mean!

When my wife took the NJ driver's written test (it's multiple-choice), she said that a yellow light means "you should speed up to get through the light before it turns red". Really. That's what she answered.

Actually it means Caution per the law

and in the case of driving and seeing the green turn yellow to be cautious you need to consider the distance between you and the light and cars around you.

if you're close to it and will make it before the red then go, but if you're to far and can't then slow down.

That is why in areas that gain red light cameras some towns have actually shortened the yellow. so people estimating the distance as they have for years or maybe even decades now get a ticket.

I generally do not risk the Yellow at camera intersections because I know the robot ticket generator is not a cop and will always issue the offense while a cop might just ignore it depending on traffic, weather and road conditions.

And the illegal shortening of yellow lights has triggered lawsuits whenever someone has the money to do it.

There is a law for the minimum time of an amber based on the speed limit of the given streets
