1 edit | [memory] FB Dimms I've just picked up a Dell Precision WS with Dual Xeon processors (5400) for cheap but need to stick more Ram in it.
Now I have the choice of buying the brand name (Kingston, Crucial etc) and paying the price for it, or saving around $100 by buying a lesser brand such as this : »tinyurl.com/6tdfzob
Anybody have any thoughts? I've always bought Kingston, but the price difference is huge. -- No, I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I... I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake....... |

 | I've never had good luck using standard RAM in servers, especially older ones and the Dell WS pretty much is a server board. Regardless of brand, if I order the exact specs - FB, ECC, whatever, I rarely have luck. If I order the exact part number generated by Crucial or Kingston's configurator, I rarely have problems.
I think the problem is getting modules that match the specs but that contain higher density chips than the motherboard/chipset can handle. Unless you know what density chips the board will handle and what you plan to order uses (and that info is rarely available), you may run into problems. Using the exact Kingston/Crucial match has always avoided that problem for me. |

| reply to elwoodblues One problem with "lesser" brands is that they are often B-rated parts that are, in fact, manufactured for or by "name" brands. To confuse things, sometimes a well-known plant will try selling without a middleman, using an obscure house label.
With memory, it might help to know what modules are on there. Without this, a decent return policy would make a huge difference.
Also, if you can get detailed specs, you might find that the cheap RAM has far looser timings. -- My Site |

| These guys have a ZERO return policy, in fact many vendors won't take back memory.
It pisses me off because none of the big box stores will carry this stuff (have fun finding decent DDR3 let alone FB DIMMS)and the smaller shops tell you to pound sand if it doesn't work. -- No, I didn't. | I have had good luck buying RAM on ebay when necessary for older machines. At first glance, this listing looks promising: »www.ebay.com/itm/MICRON-8GB-2x-4···fdb821e2
