Re: WoW-aholics I've been playing since the release of Vanilla and definitely played too much, particularly when I lived in the middle east and there was not much else to do. I just stopped cold turkey last july when I had to spend a month in the hospital and frankly didn't miss it much.
But, for some reason a couple of weeks ago I decided I needed to give SWTOR a try and made it to lvl 16 before I kept asking myself why I was doing this instead of leveling a shammy in WoW or getting my "Salty" title. So I re-subbed the other day and have really been enjoying my return to wow. But, its hard to be disciplined and not give into the temptation to give WoW too much of my time.
I think I feel like the coke addict who comes clean and then decides to start doing it on a recreational basis. Its a very slippery slope. |

KilroyPremium,MVM join:2002-11-21 Ann Arbor, MI | reply to navymaverick WoW is just like any other hobby. It is a waste of time that keeps you entertained. The problem is when it becomes more than that.
I play, a lot, but it isn't my lift. I took a two week vacation to Mexico and didn't play at all, and didn't miss it. When I'm home and can play, I play for a while and do what needs to be done. WoW hasn't made me miss work, doesn't make me miss family functions, it fills the extra time that I have.
A normal day is getting up, checking my e-mail, doing a few dailies, get ready for work, work, come home, e-mail, WoW, dinner with the wife and then watch something with the wife.
On the weekend I play WoW for most of the day if I don't have something else planned. In the evening I watch something with the wife. If I wasn't playing WoW I'd only be doing something else. -- When will the people realize that with DRM they aren't purchasing anything? |

cent join:2011-03-03 Dublin, OH | reply to navymaverick I'm almost ashamed to think about it. I had to quit because I heard a statistic that now men older then 30 spend more time playing video games then those 18 and under. Then I thought about the fact that playtime is not generally considered a need for adults although recreation would be a need. I'm all for recreation, but I got a lot more joy out of not playing video games then playing. I don't know what made it click, but I'm now enjoying reading and spending time with my wife which I got too little of. As for the amount of time, 0 is by far best for me. But I can still understand it as a hobby. If people can find a benefit from it, I'd say 3-5 hours a week isn't too bad. Just re-create on other things for balance I think is a good idea. For kids, it probably be a lot better not even touching video games. They tend to be addictive and take over the whole play-time and minimize interaction with peers.
Just my opinion,

| remember that "studies" artificially limit variables for the sake of simplifying a measurement. Unfortunately, people then spew "study results" without mentioning the test conditions (one reason I call statistics "voodoo math").
Many men over 30 are realizing that many of their real-life aspirations simply aren't in the cards... they've given up the notion of playing pro sports, dating a supermodel, or becoming a millionaire. This creates a settling that allows them to spend more time at home continuing whatever hobby they've learned to turn to when they need to veg.
if you feel you need to take a break from wow to motivate yourself to start a new hobby, that's great. I try to start a new hobby every year (this year will be woodworking and scuba diving). In all things.. moderation and balance are essential. -- Immergruen (resto/kitty) on Nathrezim Server (US) Guild leader for Pride and Ego "You never truly know someone... until you fight them"

I totally forgot to sub for 1 year WoW so I can get D3 for free being that I don't have to actually pay for a full year since the World is ending. |

| reply to navymaverick Used to play a lot...A LOT. 4+ hours a day/ 6 days a week. Somehow managed to balance work, family with that. I got WoWed out. Don't play much anymore, even intentionally miss raids having my brother call me at times wondering if I'll show (I actually get to play my Hunter for this team instead of my usual tank/healer role). You'd think they'd find another dps. Been spending more time with the kids utilizing my Hulu Plus more lol. Also, about to Prestige a third time on MW3. -- I'm not loafing. I got paid to powerlevel, cool ^_^ I did that too. However, one of those days was due to a snowstorm, yet I worked/played on that day
I used to play 4-5 hours a night, until Skyrim came out and I just kept losing interest with the new content.
Now I've started that old 4-5 hour addiction with SWTOR. I luckily have other hobbies too, so it keeps a balance. I go in phases. For 2 weeks, I will do it every night, then I may go a few days without playing anything.
When I first started playing in Jan 2008, I think I went 2 days straight with perhaps 2-3 hours sleep. That first month, I barely slept. Just wanted to play when I was not at work. Never lost my job over it thank goodness, came close a few times, but luckily I am still here lol. |
